The government has only ONE agenda, take away our money!! They are up to using almost 50% of the GDP. Half way to their goal!!

GPS can disable texting while vehicle is moving. MAKE IT A LAW!!!

So no one in any moving vehicle could text? Not gonna happen, nor should it, IMO. The specific types of distractions are endless, and banning each as it arises won't solve the basic problem.
I'd vote for banning most billboards, though. ;)

Big whoopla....anything that distracts a drivers attention is already illegal...if during the course of an accident investigation if texting or any other distraction is found :
a charge of reckless or dangerous driving can be laid.....

Right now while cruising up I-95 I am typing this post, turning up the radio volume, selecting something on my ipod, talking on the phone, playing online euchre, eating lunch, and submitting a bid on the Panther bid board. I'm not the least bit distra

Thats all you ever hear of mulittasking?

Why? Why would this happen? Only because they did not prepare in advance....they did not have these way back when and there was no chaos on the roads....

Lazy drivers need GPS devices....drivers in a hurry need GPS devices...unprepared drivers need GPS devices....

Are you calling me Lazy OVM? I love my GPS but I also back it up with good old fashioned paper maps and common sense:D

To be honest, I won't mind them banning cell phones in vehicles at least banning non hands free. Too many people on a cell phone who can't turn a corner because they have that cell phone to their ear. As far as talking on the cell phone while driving, it's no more dangerous then talking to your passenger or singing along with your radio
Remember when cell phones used to be car phones they almost all were hands free.
I see alot of semi drivers shifting, turning corners while holding a cel phone to their head. At least they seem to be driving okay, the same can't be said for most four wheelers:eek:

This have very little to do with Safety ,
all need to be done for Safety is Driver training .

its about control ,
it's about senators re-elections. (or they will band it from all vehicles)
and its about money ,big money .

just whit and see :

they will band Texting while driving from all vehicle ,
but the will go way dipper for commercial drivers.

Just be careful what you wish for .

soon you will not be allowed to talk or go online in a commercial vehicle . regardless if driving or not .
(how can you get your 10 H sleep , if your air card show that you where on line , and your cell record show talking)
they are control freaks , and they will use your money to put you out of business .and get reelected.
this administration needs to go away !

good night , now i can Go2 sleep , nothing like venting...

The banning of electronic handheld or otherwise devices while driving is taking hold across both nations. We now have 4 provinces that have a ban in place and another 3 are considering it and looking at laws to ban distracting devices. Several states already have laws so for us it is just another thing we have to comply with and work around as we travel. We've all probably seen accidents caused by distracted drivers using a phone or other device and since people will not use common sense or even think the govt is legislating to make us do the right thing. No we don't need more rules and regulations but unfortunately this is the result of some noisy lobbying groups.
We have only more regulations coming making it harder for all of us to perform our jobs.

The bigger question is; does it really matter if we ban the devices that the companies are actually putting into the cars?

What I mean is that the person matters, I don't think making things hands free will help, or banning GPS units or what ever because the person driving is still an idiot many of the times.

The accident may still be caused by the driver, who can't think on her/his own, singing to the brats in the back or trying to change the DVD for them or just talking to their friends on the way to work or school.

Hands free means nothing, you are still talking, you are still focusing on the conversation and not the road. It is much like writing directions on the window and reading them, there is still that distraction.

I won't get into the sleeper berth issue, there is something that can be said about it and the misconceptions that many have.

Bus drivers and interstate truckers will also face the ban, once the government, in their infinite wisdom, can come up with a definition of "texting while driving".
Would this be the same government that wasn't even able to come up with a legal definition of fatigued for the FMCSR's ?

Speeding is illegal too...tell me you never do that....

there all kinds of laws on the book to take care of "distracted drivers" that aren't enforced now...as was said, this has nothing to do with safety, its about satifying the whiners and collecting votes and control....

Greg ?
holding back ?
Na'hh...
shoot at will ,
or you can call compliance at OOIDA your self ,
and ask them about a court case they are handling for one of the members...
Some DOT officers are writing tickets ,
they think it is up to the driver to have a prof that he spend his 10 hours sleeping ...(and no it's have nothing to do with the Minnesota fiasco )
that gives enough ground for the Insurance and ambulance chasers lawyers ,
and politicians are soon to follow.(or as we can see ,actually leading the way).
once they get their fungus grown foot in the door...

One in the same.

Rose A. McMurray, acting administrator for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, which regulates the trucking industry, said there would first need to be a definition of “text messaging.”

Ms. McMurray said she expected that it would take several months to complete a rule governing buses and trucks, during which time the agency would study the “array of devices” used by these drivers.

She said that she expected to ban truckers from texting with their phones and also to ban behavior “that would require fingers to manipulate a keyboard (A.K.A. Qualcomm), or to take the eyes off the road” to use a keyboard and, possibly, other technologies used for typing.

I wonder if the federal employee "driving while texting" ban extends to the MIB and their famous encrypted Blackberries?

What dose Tommy-le-Johns & Will smith have to do with it ?...
Nothing. While "MIB" is the name of a movie, it's got nothing to do with the 6 or 7 federal agencies (US Treasury, ATF, FBI, Secret Service, and others) where they have their celebrated Blackberries (Research In Motion, a Canada company), specially made with secure encryption so they can text each other in complete privacy.

Distracted driving is a catch all already. Passing more laws is nothing short of stupid its being done so morons will think the government is doing something. Like gun laws just enforce the darn laws that are already on the books more laws will not make anyone safer. If laws made people safer no one would be murdered last time i checked there is a law against doing that. And people are murdered every day.
