Captain John Smith "He who shall not work, shall not eat."

400 years ago, in the early settlement of Jamestown, Virginia Capt John Smith declared those who refused to work would not eat. Would any American politician take such a clear stand today?

I spend more time these days searching for the reasons our society has gone so far astray from the virtues of work, industry and self-reliance. For too many people, there's no pride and no shame. The modern welfare state cares for many able-bodied people from cradle to grave. We need to revamp this public thievery before there are more takers than producers. A bum's vote is equal to that of a worker putting in 60 hours a week. Maybe we as a nation need to reconsider the true meaning of fairness and personal responsibility.

I was hoping on just the 47 percent. Guess that number is slightly off. ;)

The Marxist indoctrination camps, known as public schools and universities, have been feeding their swill to children for decades. Their persistence and hard work has finally paid off. Get this, some STILL say that we WON the "Cold War". Seems to me that we got our butts kicked.

As Ms. Thatcher said, it will all work out just fine until we run out of other people's money.

Then the king will say to those at his right hand, "Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me."

Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, "You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me." When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions.

He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on."

You forgot one. The eighth commandment. "Thou shall not steal".
Oh, I didn't forget it - I was just focused on the New Testament, not the Old ...

As to the stealing part, the power to tax and spend is ensconced in the Constitution.

It's a thing that is a double-edged sword ...

IOW, when you support it for the things you like and want, there's a pretty good chance that eventually, at some point or another, it's gonna get used for things you don't like or want.

Being poor is a lack AFTER you have done all there is to do! Those we would help as neighbors. Poverty on the other hand is a curse of your own doing. The path of the sluggardly is filled with thorns. There are three groups we are to support; the Widow the orphan and the stranger. All temporary as the widow will die, the orphan grow up and the. Stranger will grow accustomed to our ways. My we as a nation should learn by remembering, not plunging blindly ahead!

Rlent, you can't understand the NT without understanding the OT, its the same GOD in both.

So if you think Jesus was saying it is godly to support bums and naredowells, I think you have self deludly missed the overarching biblical teaching. Perhaps you might spend some time going through the Proverbs.

You might want to strum through Thesolonians.

10 For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. 11 For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. 12 Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.

So thats pretty clear isnt. Socialism is NOT a Christian teaching.
