    Weird Road signs

To go along with the "no doom and gloom" idea started in another thread I came up with this one. What are some of the odd road signs you have seen? Signs that are specific to an area or just unique. I'll start with this one. It's on the road north out of Smooth Rock Falls ON. It makes you...

    Favorite stretch of road

I-26 between Asheville and Johnson City TN, and call me crazy but there is just something peaceful about I-75 on the flat in OH. Farmland I guess..... In Canada, I like 11 once it turns west from Cochrane ON. Road can be rough as H at times but the north is just beautiful.

    19000 lb piece of crap

Snoop, if your in Ontario don't let anyone other than Toromont CAT touch that engine. They know what they're doing well beyond any FL dealer. Also, if you are having Allison troubles taking it to Harper FL in Mississauga would help. Harper was/is the Allison distributor long before they became a...

    Oil Analysis blues

Blowby or huff indicates poor cylinder sealing (rings or cyl wall). Chrome readings may not be high as chrome ring surfaces can be more wear resistant than the iron cyl wall. The cylinder walls can get "polished" with a lot of idling or poor oil maintenance. When this happens it will huff and...

    MBE 900 Misfiring

If shutting the truck off can make the problem go away it really sounds like it's electrical/electronic. Davekc's advice is a great place to start. Without codes it will try your patience as techs are taught to follow the codes and very few are taught any more how to listen and think...

    Oil Analysis blues

When an engine idles that much things cool down and may not be optimum. Prolonged idling can result in low oil flow to the top of the engine and lead to top end problems. Pistons shrink a bit when they aren't at operating temp so they don't always run as true. Fuel wash into the motor oil...

    New Tractor

Most dealerships need to make 5 to 6 grand per truck so a lot depends on what the factory charged them for it and what incentives they got from other suppliers (i.e. Bridgestone would give the dealer a rebate for specing it with a certain one of their tires). There is a lot of this that goes on...

    Oil Analysis blues

That's the problem with one off oil samples. Oil samples are best used to look for trends. Take the last sample to a CAT or Detroit dealer. See what it says. If you feel at all uncomfortable walk away. You'll never feel sure about that motor if you have doubts and you'll start thinking you 're...

    MBE 900 Misfiring

Yes they can do a cylinder balance test with a computer with DDL software. Sounds like they did that to nail it down to number 3. If the unit pump is failing in a short time (60 k is short), I'd be looking at a couple of things. First, make sure it is a fuel noise. Fuel noises change tone...

    mbe 900 oil pressure fluctuation

Those Germans are always coming up with neat stuff (a unimog is German right?). I've only read about that and it raised oil pressure at lower rpm, it was supposed to save horsepower at high rpm but give you good pressure at low rpm for hard lugging. I can't remember who it was but I think it...

    mbe 900 oil pressure fluctuation

If it still does it, keep a good eye on all your guages when it drops. I'd really like to find a simple answer to this without you having to go to an engine shop and $pend.

Service claims to help shippers avoid high fuel surcharge

Last fleet I managed I had sales pitches like this all the time. They come in and "teach" you how to buy fuel and "consult" for the low low price of 10 to 30 thousand a year. Unless you are a complete idiot and fill your 500 truck fleet up at the full serve Mobil downtown they can't save you...

    New Tractor

Both are very slippery trucks. I haven't seen any good (same spec) comparisons yet from a fleet but the folks I know report better numbers with the FL. With the big rad the fan hardly runs at all (saves fuel) and the Int folks complain about the cab (doors leak, wiring). Both are FULL of...

    Ridiculous Gas Prices!

Oh yeah.....oil is going up because places like China are gobbling it up now and they weren't before. Why do they need so much oil? Cause we all herd like sheep into Wal-Mart every weekend and support their manufacturing economy. yes, piper has a peeve against off shore goods......

    Wichita Kansas.

I've got a pickup with a short box (6') and a high (53") cap. I started working for a small outfit up here as they would take me on with this equipment, figured I could try out the lifestyle without making a big investment (yet). The load pays OK enough to run home empty but with diesel...

    Wierd Western Star

Cab air suspension. When western Star started to put an air suspension on their cabs they simply took the cab they had and put the bags under it. An old Western Star cab sat pretty much right on the frame rails, folks might remember when the exhaust pipes wrapped around the back of the fuel...

MBE 900 oil pressure and usage question

Anything is possible I guess, Thrust bearings control fore and aft movement, if putting the engine under load causes fore and aft movement of the crank or cam there are some very ugly things going on. Thrust bearing wear (on the crank) is usually the result of clutch issues or very old age. A...
