A shotgun for varmits? Nature does suck, all that wonderful wildlife messing things up. Why should a gun scare you? They are just tools. No more dangerous than any other mis-used tools. Shooting sports are called "disiplines". I used to be a firearms instructor for 4H. I taught kids between the ages of 8-16. Not ONE of my kids ever got in trouble. Shooting can be very relaxing. You should try learning for real sometime. Join a local gun club. Then you can meet some REAL Americans!!!! LOL. Just poking fun again. Layoutshooter

A gun is an inanimate object. It is no more dangerous than any other inanimate object. It's nothing to be afraid of. It's no more dangerous than a power saw, floor jack, toaster or carving knife. I don't know what your situation is in S.D. but keep in mind a shotgun is a short range weapon. Depending on how wide open an area of the state you are in it may not be the best choice.

Shooter.....just one of them things I guess....But everyone says I need to...and I am a little excited too....we have no gun clubs...nearest city is 150 miles away....I have enough family out there to show me...most carry out there...handgun on the hump and rifle or shotgun in the truck....No lack of firepower in NW SD if the ruskies or Chinese come calling!!!

By the way OVM, while the Safey course would be a very good idea for you it will not help you if you need to use it. There is only one way to be good with any firearem and that is to practice with it. If you don't do that your firearm will only give you a false sence of security. You will not be accurate with your shot and you will be likely to wound whatever it is you are trying to kill. A wound wolf or cat is thousands of times more dangerous than a healthy one. Considering that for the most part a wolf or cat would prefere to stay away from people anyway I see little use for a firearm that you don't know how to use. Layoutshooter

I think you most likely would enjoy the sport if you got into it. It is a shame that there is no formal training in the area. Not to put a knock on your relatives but not everyone that owns a firearm knows how to use it properly and not everyone who knows how to use one properly can teach someone else how to shoot. Maybe you can contact the NRA. Firearms instruction is one of thier most important functions. In fact, that is the very reason that Congress created and comissioned them for. Too bad I don't live up there and have to drive for a living, I could make a supurb shot out of you. I could use the pratice myself. This business is not good for my important skills, shooting, hunting fishing etc. Layoutshooter

recoil and weight is why we have the m-16, everyone has to qaulify once a year with it...now the lighter the round the more you can carry...and how many females or even some men could shoot consistant groups..with the recoil generated from the .308 round...its called flinching...the biggest reason there is for shooting inaccuracies..it can be from the kick of the weapon, anticipating the recoil, or the loud sound of the weapon going off..after 40 rounds of the .308 plus your zeroing, most ladies in uniform would balk at qaulifying..

Very good!!! Contact them and see if they have certified instructors. It is by far the best way to learn. I will take you up on staying up there, I seldom get up that way. It is way off our normal freight lanes. By the way, for varmits you might consider a .22/250, .22MAG, the M16 5.56 or any other of the "varmit" calibers. I use my 30.06 for varmits. It is not ideal for that but it gives me more practice with my deer rifle. Layoutshooter

Some of the better locals use bow and arrow not xbow regular bow....more sport and challenging they say!!!

Sounds wonderful. I have often wanted to hunt birds up there. It is hard in this business. I take what time I can for hunting with family. Does not leave much time for other adventures. Layoutshooter

Like I said shooter...if there is an invasion, NW SD is armed and ready.....
In our area everyone works...some have 2-3 jobs to make ends meet, the wives work and kids work P/T after school...there's not one I can think of on welfare....and virtually no crime!!! Everyone knows people have guns and know how to use them...the proof is in the stats...Guns work!!

I have a friend with a dream job. He works for Kimber in Kalispell, MT. He lives several miles out of town. They can sit on their back porch and watch all sorts of game go by. They can shoot on their property too. I don't care about hunting but I'd love to have a place with at least 200 yards available for a safe practice range.

I have small place by South Dakota standards...11 acres...I could have a shooting range...

Well, OVM, as of now I am stuck living in MI due to family concerns. Who knows what might happen in the future. I would have a range if it lived there. Layoutshooter

OVM,
If you want to use a shotgun for small animal protection, I would recommend that you learn how to shoot skeet and go for it every couple weekends. This will give you some practice with holding the weapon, using it on the fly and target tracking. For a beginner with the right people you will become comfortable and respect the weapon quicker doing something non-killing with it.

OVM, What town in S. Dakota? Looking at the map I would have to live around Pierre or Mobridge. Looks like anywhere up and down that river. I need LOTS of water and S. Dakota looks like it is a bit water impared. At least compared to Michigan. Layoutshooter

Bison...along state highway 20....go west out of Mobridge theres 12 and 20 breaks off...after the Missouri river....Lots of water, well for SD up that area... with the reservior...Zip 57620 if ya google it....
Aberdeen is swamped for jobs no people...it's growing leaps and bounds...NO State Income tax....4% sales tax....

A guy that you seem to be would prolly love it out there...Guns are cool, everyone works, and they mind there own business....and the most important..they believe less government is better
