COLUMBIA, S.C. - A former chairman of the South Carolina Election Commission has apologized after his posting on Facebook suggested a gorilla that escaped form a Columbia zoo was an ancestor of first lady Michelle Obama.
Minutes after the gorilla’s escape was reported Friday, Rusty DePass posted: "I’m sure it’s just one of Michelle’s ancestors — probably harmless."
The comment has since been deleted, but DePass confirmed to WIS-TV that he made it, apologizing and saying it was a joke about statements Obama has made about evolution.
DePass is a former chairman of the Richland County Republican Party. He didn’t respond to a phone message Saturday from The Associated Press.
Former state Republican chairman Katon Dawson says the comment was sad and disappointing.
By now most everyone has seen the classless comments made by Depass recently about Michelle Obama. I call attention to this because the Right-wingers are always squealing about the "hate-mongers" of Left-Wing Talk Radio without ever saying a word about the bilge coming from second rate clowns like Depass. For those who haven't seen his insults, there's an excerpt above:
The bottom line is that there is, and always has been, a huge double standard with the hate mongering that the media claims is an exclusive domain of democrats. Rush is probably the worst, but when you include others like O'reilley, Beck, Hannity it would seem the right-wing haters might just have the advantage in numbers. The GOP probably won't do a thing about Depass, given their obvious satisfaction with lousy sterotypes. However, if all the democrats or just plain decent folks with morals started boycotting the GOP perhaps they would see fit to put him out in the same pasture as George W. Bush.
