Breaking News

A US appeals court has ruled that President Barack Obama's former chief of staff Rahm Emanuel cannot run to be mayor of Chicago, a report says.

Lawyer Burt Odelson said the court had voted 2-1 to overturn a judge's ruling to keep Mr Emanuel's name on the ballot, the Associated Press reported.

Those challenging Mr Emanuel's election bid claim he did not meet a residency requirement.

Mr Emanuel quit his White House job in October last year.

This isn't a federal issue, it is a state issue and one of the many problems with our courts.

By the way, very glad he can't run.

I also like the idea that he can't run too. Chicago doesn't need anymore criminals in their politics, they already have too many now!
Wonder if he'll be going back to Obumma?

His lawyer has already said they are going to appeal to the Supreme Court and that it will be "fast tracked"....I guess being on the "A" list helps...

The BBC News article was badly worded, where it says, "A US appeals court." That makes it appear as if it was a US Court of Appeals or something. It was the Illinois State Appellate Court.

Also, "His lawyer has already said they are going to appeal to the Supreme Court..."

That's the Illinois State Supreme Court, not the US Supreme Court.

The lone dissenting opinion of Justice Bertina Lampkin is pretty funny in contrast to the reasoning of the majority, and I was right there with her until she concluded her opinion with, "The majority's decision disenfranchises not just this particular candidate, but every voter in Chicago who would consider voting for him." As if that is supposed to matter. <snort>

I don't care one way or the other. But if he cant run because he worked for the Federal Government, then it would seem any person who had served in the Military for more then 12 months away from Illinois. Would also be penalized after separation from their service from running for any office.

Its not that he worked for the Fed Gov in DC, but that he made DC his NEW Residence while he rented out his home in Chicago and had no Residence there.....if he had kept the house as his residence and just "lived" in DC as a "temp" residence with the Chicago address listed as his primary residence, he wouldn't be having thee problems....but he "needed" that rent money...he didn't scam enough from Fannie and Freddie.....

That's the best news I've heard today. Chicago has enough problems w/o that bucket mouth being there. Maybe he can get together with the old Governor and start a new mafia.

Not the same as military, you have a "home of record" when in the military. He was NOT an elected official, he was an employee of the executive branch.

Just as when I was in government service I was REQUIRED to have a legal residence where I lived. I was no longer a Michigan resident.

That is how it has always been.
