    Diesel engine

Most automotive alternators need to spin at 2000 rpm to start to give full output most like 4000. That's alternator speed not engine speed. Big pulley on the crankshaft, little pulley on the alt = zoom zoom! What ya building Ken, a backup power source for the apocalypse?

    Biodiesel

For locations selling it: National Biodiesel Board - www.biodiesel.org - www.nbb.org Lots of other good info on it. In theory it should give you less MPG because pure bio is 11% oxygen by weight so it has less energy in it. That said, new engines with EGR reduce the amount of oxygen in the...

Is this enough truck for the job?

Both are adequate for single axle use. If you buy the 7sp (if it's a Spicer) get it checked out by someone. Those transmissions were easily abused and they are pretty much throw away when they go boom.

    Mecedes and ether problems

Any mechanic worth his tools should know better than to use ether on an engine with glow plugs or an intake heater. The ether is almost surely why your intake heater is malfunctioning. When you spray ether in the intake it ignites at the heater and not in the engine, the heater is not meant to...

    Winter Fronts

On the big stuff, winter fronts dissappeared due to the almost universal use of air to air aftercoolers. If they don't have fresh air the engine will run like crap and smoke (fail to meet EPA std's). Some light stuff (eg Duramax) come with a winter front that they specifically tell you not to...

    cold weather and deisel

Depends on the type of heater, some use coolant (engine has to run), some use 12V to basically heat a small amount of fuel to barely keep the filter open until the fuel heats up (only runs with key on), some use 120v and if your truck is plugged in will keep the filter warm and give the engine a...

    cold weather and deisel

ej, a lot of owners and fleets shun the additives because drivers buy or use too much of it. I've had guys try to turn in 50 bucks worth of receipts for the stuff from one trip! If you buy good fuel in the near area it is blended for those temps and then some. Usually the case is what was...

Fuel prices and the writers strike

Leo has a good point, it's hard to feel bad for the guy who wants to drive his big square Pete at 75 mph so he can get to the truck stop and leave it idling (cause no matter what CAT says, it's better to idle it, some guy told me so) while he grocery shops at the J store (ooooh look, chrome air...

    tips on pumping fuel

And fuel up any time you want in Canada, pumps are temperature compensated. There should be a sticker on the pump that says 15 deg.C litre. It was said that you win when the fuel is cold, and since it's cold here more often than not I guess it was hurting the poor oil companies.

    Canada FAST card

I should've been a bit clearer OVM, I meant it was the reason you are still supposed to have other ID in a FAST lane with a FAST load and not use your FAST card as personal ID.

    Canada FAST card

The story I got from the FAST folks was that the card was only a way to attach a "driver" to a pre approved fast load. For example, if your load is FAST approved and you as the driver of said load are an angel, load goes through because the whole package (you and the load) are likely low risk...
