Happy Birthday Bob

Looking back to the first birthday I celebrated with Bob I have to giggle as we were married and he was turning the ripe old age of 18.  As with most young married couples we had little to NO money and I struggled with what to get for a birthday gift.  I knew what I wanted and what I thought he should want so I proceeded with my plan.

Remember at this time we lived in the southwest corner of Kansas and shopping meant a long-distance drive of over one hundred miles.  So, I turned to a catalog and I ordered a water bed, liner, and the heater for $99.00 and free shipping.  We had some pretty creative meals to have the extra money for the bed and then Bob had to make the frame with the help of his brother-in-law.  Thankfully he was as excited about the water bed as I was.  When the bed frame was original made, it had a pedestal for the frame to sit on and over the years we added the drawers.  One year Bob and I took a shop class and he built the head board.  The bed frame has a lot of scratches on it from our dogs jumping into the bed. Our bed is turning 40 years old this year.

Since that first birthday present none have been as memorable or have we been as broke.  I like practical presents and when we were racing I believe one year we each got new racing helmets for our birthdays as our birthdays are one month apart to the day. When we had horses  we took one mare to be bred and Bob was not real excited about that year’s birthday.  As the years have went by we usually are working on our birthday’s and it is just another day and we are lucky if we remember to say Happy Birthday to each other.

This year though we are attending car races in Salina, Kansas that one of the agents for Landstar is hosting.  We will get into the races for free, have dinner, and watch some great racing.  This will be a birthDAY that we will both enjoy.

On the next day, we will attend a Landstar Safety meeting before we head out to Dallas for the Great American Truck Show.

Notice on the bottom of the bed where Bob spent a lot of time carving The Caffee's and in the corner of the frame it says "Bob & Linda"
