It was unsolicited, commercial, sent to multiple individuals, and contains no way to remove one's address from the list. That makes it spam.

If it's truly spam then why is the one I got different than yours? Mine said to unsubscribe all I had to do was type unsubscribe in the subject line and hit reply. So, I did. Why would you get your knickers in a wad about this? Just delete it and get on with your day. Geez...

I received a phone call on my cell, which is not really public knowledge, from a nice sounding lady from FedexCC .... poor girl, I was laughing so hard she hung up on me!

"You want me to work for you? Honey it aint never gonna happen, Landstar treats me too well!"

I once lived in a neighborhood that was kind of remote. Nice place, except we had an abundance of teenagers that were getting a bit rowdy and destructive, vandalism-wise. Though they didn't limit themselves to one or two destructive things, what they seemed to really like was smashing mailboxes. Burglaries were also on the rise, perhaps owing to our remoteness.

Between that and other issues of being remote, the sheriff patrol being a ways away, we considered a security patrol, at least temporarily. We had a couple residents object. They said, "So we have to replace a mailbox now and then! So what?" It was probably his kid smashing them.

Well, hey-ell no. This spammer must be terminated, his possessions thrown in a filthy box, and he should then be escorted to the door. He should then be punched in the stomach a couple times, and then thrown to the pavement. When he gets to his car, he should find the windows smashed and the tires slashed.

Since it's his first offense, we'll let him off that lightly. He does it again, it's time to get ****ed off, maybe unleash the same retribution the mobster unleashed on Zed in Pulp Fiction.

But it cannot be unsolicited, commercial, to multiple recipients, AND have no unsubscribe method. THAT'S WHAT MAKES IT SPAM--THAT COMBINATION. Unfortunately, violating the CANSPAM law is only a misdemeanor.

There is a handful of states that the law is a little stricter California being probably the toughest but no one is going to be prosecuted for sending out few hundred email.

Again, unfortunately, the federal act superseded all state anti-spam laws. It was rushed through just before California's was to take effect.

Nor should they be fired and their livelihood taken away. I guess the next time you make a driving error you should lose your job.

You make it sound like this was some error, some slip-up. No, the email was composed, addressed (or merged with a mailing list to automate it), and then sent. That's three distinct, voluntary steps that were done intentionally. Not nearly the same as a "driving error." So yes, they should be fired, prosecuted, penalized in some way like paying a large fine, and then should be banned from touching a computer for ten years.

Well, I did fix the problem. I followed the instructions to unsubscribe. I have a feeling your e-mail had the same instructions, but your outrage kept you from getting to that part. But, I didn't see yours and I could be wrong.

You're comparing this to destructive vandalism? Really? Wow, I just don't see it. Most e-mail services keep unwanted crapola to a minimum, and I just don't understand getting so worked up about the few that get through. Seriously, what's the damage? Is it taking up hours of your day and hindering your productivity? No, it can't be that since you have time to compose dramatic posts here about how wrong it is.

The patrol would have been supplied by a company, not the residents. Had it worked out so it was cheap for each house every month. Less than the cost of a couple mailboxes. But that's really beside the point. That something wrong like that is going on, and it's fixable, is reason enough to fix it. Same with the spammer.

Oh, yeah, in addition to the fine, the beating, loss of his job, and being forbidden to touch a computer for ten years, he should also be castrated so he can't reproduce.

...after due process of law, of course.

I would agree with highway, like his letter my guess is your letter also had remove instructions but you were so mad from the moment you read the subject line you could not see this fact. I would also guess that at some point in the past you filled in something somewhere for the fed such as an online inquiry about work or some other type thing but have forgot about that.

Here you are still ****ed weeks later when a simple click of the delete button would have ended the problem. Life isn't long enough to go through it angry at the world.

I was always told (by IT professionals) NOT to follow instructions to 'unsubscribe' since it was simply a way for the perp to confirm that they were in fact sending to a valid address, which could then be put on a list and sold to the skankiest bidders... which would lead to getting even MORE trash.

If the letter is from a legitimate source using an unsub link is no problem. More times than not you are fine to use it but there are some true spammers will will use it for what you mentioned.
