Re: Pirates! HOW TO HANDLE IT?

Instead of water cannons,we should have flame throwers.Toasty pirates.

You want to see how this needs to be handled, take a look at how President Gerald Ford handled it:

Capture and Release of SS Mayaguez by Kmer Rouge forces in May 1975
You mean where the Marines stormed and recaptured an empty ship, and several US military personnel were killed trying to attack a military base in order to rescue hostages that had already been freed? Yeah, that was awesome. Almost as awesome as Carter's helicopter raid to free the hostages in Iran.

I think we just need to call Chuck Norris. He'd git r dun.

Isn't that outside FBI jurisdiction?

As long as the host country allows the FBI to come in they have jurisdiction when ever an American is involved. This being in the ocean they don't have to ask for permission. In fact the FBI has offices in several countries including Canada

Sure we lost people, that haapens when the military does what the do best, kill and destroy things, as they are trained ...and i think the 15,000 lbs of explosives did the trick...

Right now, it doesn't look good for the US hostage. Chances are, he will not survive this ordeal. We can't really make a deal with these pirates as it only encourages more hostage taking.

Yes, the hostage might die. But, the pirates must die. Right there in the water. Maybe give 'em the option of surrender. The whole world is watching how Obama handles this situation. He isn't in the classroom debating hypotheticals anymore. It will be interesting to see this unfold. I hope the American lives, but a strong message must be sent.

You do know that there are other hostages being held from other ships?

I think that we need to negotiate with them, offer them some really big rewards to get all the people back. Then do the same thing that was done in the first world war, have a couple ships that are manned by naval personal/marines to bait these guys and blast them out of existence.

This hostage-taking has to stop. Being blackmailed because others have been taken is not the way to go. Personally, I want to see black smoke billowing from the sinking hull of several pirate ships. Deal-making, appeasement and paying tribute money just doesn't work.

These thugs have a long history of piracy. Remember the Barbary Coast wars of the late 1700's and early 1800's? The US Navy and Marines were born out of this.

I don't see any good solution for the present hostages. Setting a strong precedent will discourage future acts of piracy. As a side benefit, it will prevent these current ragmuffins from becoming repeat offenders. Just my opinion.

Hi
Its not a rubber dingy. The Captain is being held in a escape capsule that look more like a submarine than a raft .It is completely enclosed and is air tight. They can't see the captain or his captures so guns are kind of useless.
As for wiping out a country because of a few criminals. WHAT,WOW That would be like blowing up a Walmart because a cashier short changed you.Just a little over zealous don't ya think. By the way if we don't care about killing innocent people why not just blow up the capsule and the freighter at least that way you'll accually get rid of some pirates.

Now on a more serious note.
My condolences to the Captains family. The man is a true hero in every sense of the word.He is selflessly risking his life to protect his crew.

You don't spend much time on this forum, do you Bryan?
Over zealous is a pastime here...

Ah there is no country to wipe out, it is a loose collection of warlords who run everything.

Like you would even have the first clue....

Here's a clue. We have a plan laid out that will end this stuff once and for all. It is said that it will take 72 hours to go into the home base of these punks and wipe them out. We have not used this opition in the past due to no US ship has been attacked...now it has, and the balls to do so has not come forth.....

Define "we".

Somali pirates current hold a dozen ships with more than 200 crew members being held hostage, everyone of which are in danger of being executed if the US tries any go-get-em Rambo moves. This isn't a Chuck Norris movie. There are leaders of the countries that have hostages who are appealing for the safety of all the hostages during this standoff. This afternoon an Italian tugboat was captured and 16 more crew members are now being held hostage. There are simply too many innocent lives at stake here for the US to just start killing people to satisfy the bloodlust of those ignorance of the ramifications of the diplomatic and public relations nightmare that would follow.

By bringing the US Navy ship to the scene, Obama has put our national prestige on the line. I think he might surprise us with some uncharacteristic toughness. Even though this is on a small scale, it is Obama's first test in an emerging crisis abroad. Once he has made a show of force, the Somalis cannot be allowed to walk away unpunished.

I fear his training as a lawyer will lead him down the path of deal making. It is the official policy of the US government not to pay ransom to terrorists. We cannot afford to appear impotent before these thugs. That being said, this issue is much bigger than one individual or group of individuals. I understand the strong emotional appeal to free the hostages at any cost. Yet, there is good reason why America doesn't pay ransom. There is no end to it, once it begins.

There are no good choices at this point. The Somalis must pay a hellish price such that no American flagged ship faces this foolishness again.

We= The United States

You keep refering to Chuck Norris, is he your hero? Rambo?

The Pirates have their own plan. Watch, they will move those ships and hostages to the site of the stand off. They will get out of it. And we do nothing.

So your way of thinking is what? do nothing? Nothing hasn't worked has it?
