I dunno what HIS boots feel like Hawk. But if he's allowed his truck costs (an feeding the family ain't truck costs) to exceed what the revenue will support, he be have a problem. Simple! Y'all still will always have to get away from the employee mentality (even when yer an illustrious carrier). Seems most don't have a clue what it REALLY costs em to run a mile. There prolly is still good money to be made out there, jes not as easy as they'd like. It don't work that way now, an never has.

PJ... I got mixed up between Mike's 1.15 and the Col's .90. LOL

Col... I agree about the employee mentality. Yes, .90 and 1.15 is a big difference. I see where you got the .90. What I'm saying tho is that if you don't stick to your guns, you get what the company is giving. IMO, that's more employee mentality. I decide to stick to my guns, and in turn, the run we dropped this morning was a home run. Got a call for an OH to AZ, and gave my regular (pre-catastrophic) rate. Figured it wasn't worth doing for less. Got what I wanted, and now we're enjoying the weather.

Unless Mike, and others like him, stick to their guns, they'll end up being stranded at first. Only other option is to start their own team. Maybe that's a dumb analogy. Time for bed. LOL

Congrats on the prehistoric rate! And the warm location!

Maybe they'll end up being stranded forever.. he's with a carrier.. and as we know, all the big carriers have way too many others to draw from. I hate that it is what it is, but seems most larger carriers have you between a rock and a hard place.. too many signed on.. lowered rates that generally may not be negotiable.. and most won't allow you to get your own stuff.. or add on to their stuff.. there seems to be only a couple answers, but they're expensive solutions which may or may not end up working at this point..
No answers here.. the well is empty.. everyone is just going to have to get all the info they can on all their own options, and do their best at deciding which way to go.

As to the Col.
it costs just about a .25 for fuel to run a St. truck
1.15 - .25 = .90
there ya go.
good morning.

Right now I would be happy for ANY load offer, reduced rate or not. We (my husband and I) have hardly had any loads since a week before Thanksgiving. We have had 7 loads this year all small 400, 500 and 600 milers. Been sitting since Saturday here in Kenly, NC 3rd out. At least reduced rate is better then nothing right now. (as long as it averages a few dollars more than it cost to haul :D)

No, but I can show you a truck and a family that costs more than .90/mi. If we're just out here to make a truck payment and eat hot dogs, then what is the meaning of life?

Mike99 is probably fed 1500 miles a week, if that. If he says yes to those runs, they'll feed him more mac n cheese (.90 runs). Pretty soon, his company will give him Ramen noodles or worse.

C'mon, Col... between you and me and the rest of the forum here, do you honestly think he did the wrong thing by not encouraging crappy rates from his company? We're not talking LTL here. In his shoes, would you not do the same thing by turning that run down? Personally, that offer to me would've been their last, if they put me in the penalty box.

Thank you! Excellent answer.Yes, you can operate for 90 cents but I did not invest $50 000 just to have some min or no profit.Refusing a cheep load is one thing, but being in refusal for this 8 hours????It is look like forced ...bankruptcy !

Don't worry, if T-State gets you a load they will call you. We have been given the old 8 hour before and less then 10 minutes later they called us with a load offer! lol If they let you sit for 8 hours it is because they did not have a load for you anyway! :D

come on todays load offer

dead head 107 miles
loaded miles 395

total miles truck would travel 502 pay to truck 352.80 + 42.79 fsc

total driver comp=$272.11
total owner comp=123.48

this dont come out to min charge of $1.05 per mile even on just the loaded miles

they want it expedited exclusive use.

fuel= $150.00 that driver must pay for brings driver pay down to $122.00

this load offer comes after 3 days sitting with transport time of this load

so if you take into account the fuel the driver burned for 3 nights idle

should driver accept this load?

should owner continue to service carrier thats 4 days pay to the owner or $30.00 per day
if this is the sign of how t/s is gonna run you on this reduced rate of 65% will you stick with it?

30 days of $30 = 900 how do you maintain a 50k truck on that can you pay the truck payment?

and even if you say look at it by the quarter it will be a loss

I'm having trouble with your math.if the truck befrore fsc is getting 352.80 and driver pay is 272.11,driver is getting 76%,not 40%.@ 352.80,if driver gets 60% thats 211.68,plus fsc @ 42.79 would be 254.47.now if fuel costs 150 bucks, driver would end up with 104.47,not a bad days pay,and owner would have 141.12.
This is what I've always told my drivers, and it has always worked:
Take the total miles and add 100 more for layover.divide that by your miles per gallon, multiply that by the price of fuel at the highest rate where you will be going.then divide that by the pecentage that the company will give you for an advance.if the load equals to that, you are safe to run it,and you wont be turning as many loads down and then not sitting as much.
in this senario we all have been talking about,if fuel was 2.50 a gallon, hes in a straight truck, should be gatting at least 8 mpg,pay would look like this:
502 miles plus 100 @ 8mpg would be about 75 gallons fuel.
fuel cost @ 2.50 then would be 187.50.divide that by the 45% we get at fdcc, load would have to pay $416 ,if not turn it down.what this load paid was 20 dollars short of doing it,now take in concideration where it is going.if to a hot spot, myself I would over look the 20 bucks difference,if not to a hot spot,i'd be asking for another 50 bucks, and you would most likely get it,unless there are other trucks that can make the pick up on time.
no one will be making a killing with this load, but then again, how much are you making sitting burning fuel

Wanna trade places? We're up here in the frozen north (MN) and Kenly is sooooo close to home for us :D

Ahhhh, NO! lol We found out last week when we were in Monroe Michigan the heat is not real good in this truck! It was -10 and we nearly froze. Last I saw it was like -40 in MN. Still love my truck though! :D Wouldn't ya know the Michigan weather followed us! It is actually snowing (and ice) really good here right now!

Welcome to "MY" world. The rates you're talking about are the regualar offers i get (not reduced rate, but every day rates) And I'm lucky to get one or two week. I left T/S and went elsewhere. Was promised the world. I can't believe a recruiter lied to me. I'll not name where Im at now for obvious reasons. I know everyone has to do whats best from them, but as long as freight will be moved for peanuts, peanuts is all we'll ever get.
i'm at home, truck is shut down.Been here for a week and a half now and I think I'm probably going to drive for a local company and leave my truck sit. I can't be a part of what is driving our beloved industry into the ground! Besides I figure I'm one less truck out there fighting for loads with all the trucks that have payments to make. I'm in the poor house but I can and will get by. GOOD LUCK to eveyone.

KW, after ya been mak'in that big money double dipp'in, whatca doing waiting for the beep these days.

Well the price of oil is down for now and its so cold outside think I will be in trucking again for 4 or 5 months then back to the patch. when fuel goes up again and I dont have to freeze my but off.

just so everyone knows I dont have a biz plan just a few ideas that get me by.

you know I am kinda of a rtard cause i left after 10yrs and here it is the slowest time of year the cheapest rates ever that I have seen anyway.
people dropn like flys.

anyway not in a truck just have worker bees.one happens to be driving for t/s right now waiting for his next venture.

I was gonna be buying another class8 straight and signing it on with them.not because I wanted to run their freight no way shape or form I wanted to sign on to them to give them the headaches of being a carrier but book my own freight and use them to keep track of fuel taxes and log auditing and all the comp b/s.

but they wasnt as open to the idea I guess they think they own the truck and should be able to make you sit in an area waiting on one of the customers for weeks instead of letn you book a couple weeks work on your own and at least have a fighting chance. I guess they are just stuck in the box and cant imagine how to get outside it.

In fact I think the words they used was something like if you want to run like that then you need to drive for a contractor who has authority.

heck I thought I was being nice by giving them a chance to make a team and owner some cash.but I guess $1800 to the company in a two week period isnt enough for them to fool with I guess they cant get by on $100 a day not owning the truck but they make a driver believe even though he is paying for the fuel and donates 24 hrs a day of his life plus has a truck payment and maintance he can do it all on $100 he makes 3 times a week

heck I dont want to drive at all but to much time with the better half dont make things better so i gotta do something till spring when i can get back outside.and now I am just searching for someone I can lease on with and just cover my own cost with and run myself and in turn hook them up with my method of maddness.

I dont want to get rich I make my money for a few months in trucking and for about 2 months I farm and work on oil wells the rest of the year.

everyone has to eat and for now everyone uses oil and someones got to move it.
its a balance

KW, I totally understand bein with the better half too much, and she does too! LOL, Your way if doing this sounds like it will for you and I'd be willing to bet for alot of others. I too do this because i want to, nit because i need to, lol i certainly don't pay any of my household bills with this income. So its a choice I make, I guess thats why I can do it and not whine about the rate paid, while others need to pay for their business AND their households, for those, i can understand, that would be a tough nut to crack right now, but no one is holding a gun to anyones head. We all do what we do for personal reasons, and none of them are the same.

Enjoy yourself, I am....:D

PS: when oil hits $65 a barrel again before the yr is over, enjoy your downtime and the farm! And sit back and watch the whining then!!!
