Protesters who marched at the home of Wisconsin state senator Randy Hopper (R-Fond du Lac) were met with something of a surprise on Saturday. Mrs. Hopper appeared at the door and informed them that Sen. Hopper was no longer in residence at this address, but now lives in Madison, WI with his 25-year-old mistress.
Blogging Blue reports that the conservative Republican's much-younger new flame is currently employed as a lobbyist for right-wing advocacy group Persuasion Partners, Inc., but was previously a state senate staffer who worked on the Senate Economic Development Committee alongside Mr. Hopper. Her bio has been scrubbed from the Persuasion Partners' website, but a screen-grab is available here.
Sen. Hopper has worked closely with Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker to implement the state's new anti-labor laws and enact policies favorable to the interests of big business. Like Walker, Hopper is one of the Republican politiciansnamed in a massive recall effort spearheaded by Wisconsin Democrats.
According to Wisconsin law, state elected officials who have served at least one year of their current term are eligible for recall by voters. Hopper was elected state senator for district 18 in the fall of 2008, making him eligible for recall, whereas Governor Walker will not be eligible until 2012.
Blogging Blue also reports that Mrs. Hopper intends to sign the recall petition against her husband. The petition has already been signed by the family's maid.

Just one more example of the 80/20 rule but agree it isn't political and doesn't change that they did the right thing regarding the union issue.

Republican or Democrat...he is just an idiot....

That being said it certainly isn't anything new for members of BOTH parties to have done this in the past and they will do it again..just give them time....;)

I am SHOCKED! Imagine a politician having an extramarital affair. That said, one has to marvel at the Democrats for having come up with the concept of selective morality and assigning themselves the authority to decide when it applies. I'll bet most of these sanctimonious clowns were declaring that this sort of thing was irrelevant when Slick Willie got caught repeatedly lying about all of his affairs, or sexual assaults - his personal life had nothing to do with his job performance.
It's even more amusing when we see these slackers - who abdicated their duties during legislative sessions that required their attendance - trying to issue recall petitions against the congressmen who showed up for work. If anyone in the GOP had the stones, they should start recalls for those Democrats who were AWOL. They failed to represent their constituents during critical legislative debate, and should be dismissed accordingly.

Am I the only one here that finds it odd that we're not hearing anything about this on cable news?? Even MSNBC didn't have it and you'd think they'd be jumping for joy. I googled it and came up with a lot of links but none of them looked reputable.....hmm.

DD, certainly you are not questioning author David Ferguson or the well respected Raw Story. Any blog that proclaims itself:
CARBON BALANCED; ALL CARBON EMISSIONS ARE OFFSEThas got to be reputable, right? I mean it's like on the internet and stuff.

LOL....I guess you're right. The BIG media republican haters probably confirmed the story but just didn't think it important enough to get all worked up about......what was I thinking?

absolutely wrong leo!

people who do the public service work do it thru love like teachers or because there is a call to duty like cops and firemen. you don't try to make them the scapegoats for governmental spending. they were scapegoats believe that. in wisc only the cops and firemen were not affected because they supported walker.......until walker started his game. then they crossed over to protect themselves.

If a State cannot cut wages/benefits, cannot cut Medicade, welfare, services and expenditures for infrastructure, where will they cut? How can they get into balance?

Taxes cannot keep going up, many cannot afford the tax rates now.

What is the answer?

Jack,
Don't take this wrong but teachers and other public servants are just that - servants of the public. There is no reason why anyone who works for any state, county or city needs or deserves to be represented by any union.

The exception is fire and police and it isn't because they support one candidate or another but because of the legalities that go along with their job. The union has and does provide a buffer between the public and politicians and the officer. A very good example of this is what happens in Detroit when cops are accused of shooting someone who is "innocent" but the cops were trying to stop them from killing a kid.

The bottom line is this, if the public can't control their own government which means the services that they want to stop because of a union, then the union and those who belong to it must go. This is not a system where they call the shots, it is a system that the public is in control of those who serve them.

Really?? Not according the to Top attorney at the NEA...it seems its about the power...

NEA’s Top Attorney, Bob Chanin, Says NEA’s First Goal Is To Advance And Protect Teacher Rights

By Mike Bock,
July 9th, 2009
NEA’s Top Attorney, Bob Chanin, Says NEA

Bob Chanin, described as the top attorney for the National Education Association (NEA) for 41 years, is retiring from his NEA position. His farewell speech at the recent NEA convention in San Diego was interrupted repeatedly with standing ovations. Chanin in his speech (see you-tube below) emphasized that NEA is first of all a union and that NEA earns its respect because it has political power.

Chanin posed the question of why NEA is an effective advocate. Chanin said, “It is not because of creative ideas, it is not because of the merit of our position, it is not because we care about children, it is not because we have a vision of a great public school for every child. NEA and its affiliates are effective advocates because we have power and we have power because there are more than 3.2 million people who are willing to pay us hundreds of millions of dollars in dues each year because they believe we are the unions that can most effectively represent them, the unions that can protect their rights and advance their interests as education employees.” (standing ovation)

Wow. “Education employees.” In Chanin’s words, NEA’s success has nothing to do with the merit of its ideas, nor its concern for children. It all has to do with the power that hundreds of millions of dollars and the power that millions of voters can exert. This is a frank statement of truth I doubt that NEA will be posting in its PR releases any time soon. It’s not a compliment to teachers to view teachers in the same way a manufacturing union might view widget production employees.

Chanin said that of course NEA and its affiliates want to do everything possible to close the achievement gap, reduce drop out rates and improve teacher quality. He warned, however, “These goals that guide the work we do they need not and must not be achieved at the cost of due process, employee rights and collective bargaining. That is simply too high a price to be paid.”

Amazing. “Too high a price to be paid.” According to Chanin what has the greatest value in public education is “education employee” rights. I can imagine a widget union leader saying essentially the same thing — shortly before the whole enterprise going bankrupt: “We want to to make a quality product in this factory, but more important than a quality product is the welfare of our workers.”

Chanin’s remarks point out the reality of our educational system — its hierarchical, bureaucratic structure — has denigrated teacher professionalism. Our education system is structured to resemble a very antiquated industrial model, a horse and buggy system. It is not a structure that brings out the best potential of its members. It is a structure that hampers educational quality. Chanin’s remarks, to me, point out that a different education structure in needed.

The influence of union thinking pervades the entire system of education. Schools in America are supposedly under local control. Federal and state mandates have actual control and so do teacher unions.

Chanin said, “When all is said and done NEA and its affiliates must never lose sight of the fact that they are unions and what unions do first and foremost is represent their members. If we do that and if we do it well then everything else will fall into place. NEA and its affiliates will remain powerful and that power will, in turn, help us achieve a great public school for every child.”
But, according to Chanin’s own words, achieving a great public school for every child is not NEA’s first objective, nor second objective, nor third objective. It’s after the needs of the “education employees” are addressed.

Chanin said, “Why are conservative and right wing *******s picking on NEA and its affiliates? It is the price we pay for success. NEA and its affiliates have been singled out because they are the most effective unions in the United States and they are the nation’s leading advocates for public education and for the type of liberal social and economic agenda and social agenda that these (conservative) groups find unacceptable. NEA will continue to be attacked as long as we continue to be effective advocates for public education for education employees and for human and civil rights. ..”

Teachers, paid firefighters, police, ANY government employee work FOR the taxpayers. The tax payers ARE the employer. As their employer, I have the RIGHT to control THEIR wages. They have a choice, they can work for a wage the the taxpayer can afford to pay them, OR, find other work.

What needs to happen in instances like the WI budget situation is the GOP explaining their prime directive repeatedly, and vocally: balance the budget and live within their means. Right after they took the first vote with the Democrat representatives AWOL, the AP put out a story cloaked in the "anti-union" perspective. Mind you, it could have been approached as the "pro-taxpayer" initiative or perhaps "fiscally responsible", but the mainstream media continues to tote the liberal Democrat water expressing concern for the unionized govt. employees and their out-of-proportion salaries and benefits. I just hope that all the employees of private businesses that lost their jobs due to layoffs or employers going belly-up are paying attention to these entitlement tantrums by the government unions. These midwestern states whose industries have been ruined by unions have a great opportunity to pass right-to-work laws this year and do away with public service unions once and for all - let's hope they succeed.

The problem isn't so much teachers/police/firefighters as it is other state employees who are paid far more than private sector and get pensions far above private sector pensions. There are people who made 5 figure incomes with 7 figure pensions, all pulled from the pockets of the public.

It really has nothing to do with union membership for that matter. It's just wrong period. Look at NY state. Their liability increased 1000% from 2000 to 2011. How are they supposed to cover that? It's impossible.
