If this should be moved to the soapbox, please do so:

The Feds have studied this for more then a fw yrs. Now with osamaba about to spend trillions they are now making recommendation to hit the people with a huge increase in fed tax on gas and diesel fuel.

50 percent hike in gas tax proposed

By JOAN LOWY • Associated Press • January 2, 2009

WASHINGTON — Motorists are driving less and buying less gasoline, which means fuel taxes aren’t raising enough money to keep pace with the cost of road, bridge and transit programs.

That has the federal commission that oversees financing for transportation talking about increasing the federal fuel tax.

A 50 percent increase in gasoline and diesel fuel taxes is being urged by the commission to finance highway construction and repair until the government devises another way for motorists to pay for using public roads.

The National Commission on Surface Transportation Infrastructure Financing, a 15-member panel created by Congress, is the second group in a year to call for increasing the current 18.4 cents a gallon federal tax on gasoline and the 24.4 cents a gallon tax on diesel. State fuel taxes vary from state to state.

In a report expected in late January, members of the infrastructure financing commission say they will urge Congress to raise the gas tax by 10 cents a gallon and the diesel tax by 12 cents to 15 cents a gallon. At the same time, the commission will recommend tying the fuel tax rates to inflation.

The commission will also recommend that states raise their fuel taxes and make greater use of toll roads and fees for rush-hour driving.

Although the cost of gasoline has dropped dramatically in recent months, such tax increases could be politically treacherous for Democratic leaders in Congress. A gas tax hike was one of the reasons they lost control of the House and Senate in the 1994 elections. President-elect Barack Obama has expressed concern about raising fuel taxes in the current economic climate.

But commission members said the government must find more road and bridge building money somewhere.

“I’m not excited about a gas tax increase, but the reality is our current gas tax doesn’t pay for upkeep of the system we have now,” said Adrian Moore, vice president of the Reason Foundation, a libertarian think tank in Los Angeles, and a member of the highway revenue commission. “We can either let the roads go to hell or we can pay more.”

The dilemma for Congress is that highway and transit programs are dependent for revenue on fuel taxes that are not sustainable. Many Americans are driving less and switching to more fuel-efficient cars and trucks, and a shift to new fuels and technologies like plug-in hybrid electric cars will further erode gasoline sales.

According to a draft of the financing commission’s recommendations, the nation needs to move to a new system that taxes motorists according to how much they use roads.

“Most if not all of the commissioners have a strong belief and commitment that we need a fundamental transformation of the current system,” said commission chairman Robert Atkinson, president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, a technology policy think tank in Washington.

A study by the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies estimated that the annual gap between revenues and the investment needed to improve highway and transit systems was about $105 billion in 2007, and will increase to $134 billion in 2017 under current trends.

Projected shortfalls in revenue led the National Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Study Commission, in a report issued in January 2008, to call for an increase of as much as 40 cents a gallon in the gas tax, phased in over five years.

Charles Whittington, chairman of the American Trucking Associations, which supports a fuel tax increase as long as the money goes to highway projects, said Congress may decide to disguise a fuel tax hike as a surcharge to combat climate change.

Transportation is responsible for about a third of all U.S. carbon emissions created by burning fossil fuels. Traffic congestion wastes an estimated 2.9 billion gallons of fuel a year. Less congestion would reduce greenhouse gases and dependence on foreign oil.

“Instead of calling it a gas tax, call it a carbon tax,” Whittington said.

Bottlenecks around the nation cost the trucking industry about 243 million lost truck hours and about $7.8 billion per year, according to the commission.

This in ONLY the beginning. You ain't seen nuthin yet. When all this hits the fan you will be paying European style taxes. $8-10 per for gas. Double for most items at the store due to a really high V.A.T. (value added tax for those who never lived in England, look it up) The nation wanted change, you got it. In case you did not know it, it is the responsibility of you and other small business owners to subsidise city peoples rides to work, thier bike trails, hiking trails etc. (a large percentage of the federal fuel tax is used on these things) They can't afford it, they are not business owners. We are, we are bad. Punish the hard working bad men. Make them pay for the lazy. I just can't wait to see how much the "Slavery Reperations Act" is going to cost us. Layoutshooter

Marxism at it's finest. Want to know how bad the economy will get? Just mix Jimmy Carter and Jennifer Granholms taxes and add the taxes needed for "Free" health care. Wow!! Just like Europe where our present "bad" numbers are the norm. Layoutshooter

Yep, people fell for the "change". Like everything else the government does, the money won't go for roads, etc anyway. To think Obama hasn't even hit the office chair yet. He'll just be a yes man for the old school congressman.

Yep, Carl (marx) Levin here in Michigan. Debbie Stabanow (Stab them Now but only if they are babies) They took away most of John Dingells power. Why? Two reasons: 1. His backing of the auto industry, the left wants it gone. Makes us a NON world power if we lose it. They have been going after it for years. 2. (and the main reason) His backing of our Second Amendment rights. The left hates the Bill of Rights. They are after POWER ONLY!! The Second Amendment was put it to INSURE the Power of the People. The left wants to rule and control. They crave power and will kill anyone to get it. By the way, those reasons that Dingell was bounced were NOT my idea. I hunt with several of his staff members. I learn lots while out on the boat for hours. The truth is even weirder than I could even make up. I am installing rear view mirror mounts on my shoulders, I have to start watching my back. So should anyone that loves thier freedom. Layoutshooter

You are absolutely right Layout........When osamaba get going...

You know, the first time I thought it was a mistake, now you repeated the term. Seems someone on this site ought to step in when it really is important, to condemn RACIST remarks such as this. For those of you who just cannot seem to restrain yourselves, I am sure you can find other forums to peddle your filth. Perhaps you can become a protege of Sean Hannity...

Seems to me this entire website gets defamed by this tone.

Simonsays, calling Obama, Osama Obama is NOT racist. It is a tribute to his inexperience (total inexperience) in military affairs. This "person" who is now our President Elect is going to be as inept as Jimmy Carter was. We are STILL fighting the war that Carter got us into and will be for years to come. The world will not get better and sing in harmony just by passing out Coka Cola. Obama is a child when it comes to gobal affairs and will most likely cause the deaths of more in this world than Truman and Carter did, combined. I base my opinion not on his race but my 20 years of intelligence service. That is my opinion, I earned it, I am entitled by MY Constitution to express it and I will. I can back up EVERYTHING that I say with verse and chapter, a history that is not taught in schools but a history that I lived for 20 years. I don't like Obama, I don't have too. I don't like Marxism. I don't trust anyone that likes Marxism. I don't trust anyone that does not trust me. Obama has stated on multiple occasions that he does not trust me. ( I am a gun owner) I even produced my birth certificate when I got my security clearences, when will Obama produce his? I doubt, with his addmitted criminal, backround that he could ever get those clearences on his own. His race has nothing to do with how I feel, just everything else about him. Layoutshooter

osamaba???? Am I missing something here. How is this a racist remark. Disrespectful yes, but racist? Please explain!

Well since the man i am refering to isn't BLACK (he has a WHITE mother and a muslum father) There isn't a thing racist about what I call him. for me it refers to his total dis-regard to info the country who he is by not following the required law to provide a VALID birth certificate showing he is an American citizen. Until then, i will hold the belief that he is a muslum (and i really don't care what anyone else thinks about it) and I'll tie him to the terrorist osama bin laden.....

nothing to do with race at all............ Just his nationality, lack of anything thats close to being needed to be commander in chief and president.......other then that, as was said in another post, "how was the show mrs. lincoln!?? I liked that, alot!! :D

PS:, if it matters to you at all (which i really don't care if it does or not), one of my best friends is a BLACK MAN. I'd trust him with the well being of my family in a heartbeat and often seek out his advice. BUT, he hasn't ever built anything.........:D

Moot, you are correct using Osama Obama or it's other forms is dis-respectful, that is why I use it when I do. I DO NOT respect Obama or ANYTHING that he believes in. Just in case you guys didn't know that. Just making it clear, I can't stand the bum. He is more useless than sewer scum, other than that he might be alright. About the ONLY thing good I can say about him is he has, at least so far, raised his own children. More than I can say about his parents. See, I ALWAYS look for the good in everyone. It's just SOOOOOOOOOOOOO hard with some. Layoutshooter

You know Layout, I just took it for granted that most he figured i didn't respect osamaba either, or have any use for him or his socialist entitlement mentality. But since you put it out there, maybe some don't know... Yea, I have no respect for him either........He will NEVER be my president..........

Ouch.

That will put diesel tax in California at about 79 cents a gallon; even before the State adds their pending tax increase. I think we are leading the pack towards $1.00 a gallon tax rate.

Well, chefdennis, I have, as have you, been called a racist in here JUST because we express views counter to the "watchamacallit" we have for a President-Elect. I guess some people just can't fathom that it is his lack of experience, negitive views of our nation and military and his Marxism that we don't like. It has NOTHING to do with race. Since some just can't believe that we don't like his ideas it must be due to our racism. This is going to get really ugly in this country during the next 4 years. EVERY time some expresses dislike of a policy or one of the many stupid things he will do we will be called racist. Small minds think that way. Since thier ideas must be right only something else, like racism, can account for the way I feel. I don't hide my feelings, this bum is not my president either. I have NO representation at any level in the Federal Government. I have little use for Dingell, and none for Levin or Stabenow. They DO NOT represent my beliefs or defend my freedom. Layoutshooter

I'm still amazed at the venom aimed at Obama, before he's even had a chance to prove what kind of President he will be. Except for the birth certificate charge, (if he weren't qualified legally, you think the Repubs would have let it slide?) all the name calling is based on conjecture: what you THINK he's going to do.
Whether your fears turn out to be justified or not, it's tough to consider opinions carefully thought out, when they're accompanied by emotional name calling and conjecture in lieu of facts.

Cheri, funny how that happens isn't it. I mean people make opinions based on what a person sayes, but thats not to be trusted huh? hmmm ok... but I still have no respect for a socialist , entitlement mentality liberal share the wealth spread it around president........

And When it comes to his domestic policy, i have no use for bush either.........
