    Previous careers

Various desk jobs. I worked for the IRS, but left that because I wanted a less taxing job, then spent the next 11 years at a couple banks and a financial services company, sold mutual funds for a bit, then went into expediting because things were slow in the financial services industry. (or I...

The dog days of summer: AUGUST!

Watch out for the reptiles. Lot of them there.

Yep. We're at 40 trucks currently and will be at 50 before long. We had to switch to a large fleet policy. Our cost per unit is actually lower than it was when we were smaller and on Progressive.

Who is supposed to pay the liability and cargo insurance?

Our policy has a price per unit that is the same for vans and straights. The amount of coverage is the same for all units, 1 million liability and 250k for cargo. As far as I know, most companies pay the primary liability and cargo.

The dog days of summer: AUGUST!

I've been at the office for 12 hours, and I forgot to take my 30 minute break after 8. I might have to tear up this page and re do it. Don't tell anyone.

Who is supposed to pay the liability and cargo insurance?

Those carriers are mostly only doing brokered freight and bidding it so darn low that there's not much profit in it after paying the driver and taking out the factoring fees. I'm assuming factoring fees because most of those carriers are probably factoring as well. It's a bad combination. A...

    Business Help

I was just wondering. We get calls from time to time from people who are company drivers wanting to get into a straight and people often ask me if I have a lead on any available trucks. I'm always keeping my eyes open.

    Insurance

I was being rather sarcastic. There are no big name carriers running that model, only small questionable operations that like to claim they have "200 trucks" signed on when in reality none of them are signed on exclusively. There were quite a few people running around the expo looking for...

    Business Help

If you're selling the truck, are you still insisting that it stay leased to the same carrier? What if someone would want to buy it and take it elsewhere?

The Future (End) of Truck Driving is Closer Than You Think

Well, to sound overly selfish, as long as things last long enough for me to put away a good chunk of cash......

What big name carriers are running the multi carrier model? I'm curious.

But factories still exist. Someone owns those factories. The owner of the factory isn't overly concerned with automation doing away with his job.

I've been with CIS and now with Brands. Both of these folks know their stuff. I wouldn't mess around with anyone else.

The Future (End) of Truck Driving is Closer Than You Think

No matter what they do with the jobs themselves, freight will still need to be put in boxes and delivered from point A to point B. Someone will have to own those boxes and someone will still need to coordinate those shipments. Our company name is DeMaris Transportation, not DeMaris Truck...

Brands Insurance here in Cincinnati. We switched to them. Best decision we ever made. They represent several companies, not just Progressive. We have 250k cargo for cheaper per unit than we were paying for 100k previously. 513-777-7775.

The Future (End) of Truck Driving is Closer Than You Think

Even if you eliminate the need for a human driver, a box still has to have freight in it and it still has to deliver that freight to a destination within a given time window. Someone still has to coordinate the movement of that freight. I'm in the freight delivery business, not the truck...

    Who is coming

We had a booth again this year and had a decent response, but one thing happened that didn't in previous years. I had three people drop off resumes looking for dispatching jobs.

Do cargo vans even have any sort of future in expediting?

Do cargo vans even have any sort of future in expediting?

Someone forgot got to tell that to our solo straights. in reality, the solos who run smart can make good money. The ones who have a "don't wanna go there" list a mile long or who always hold out for long loads are going to generally make less. There's a lot better rate per mile on those short...
