WASHINGTON BUREAU

WASHINGTON – U.S. President Barack Obama sees the Canadian seal hunt as "inhumane" and vowed to express his "outrage" during his days as a senator, it was revealed today.

Obama, who has not spoken publicly about the seal hunt since becoming President, vowed in a 2006 letter to animal-rights activists to work with colleagues "to ensure that we take all the necessary steps to express our outrage" with the Canadian government.

"I share your concerns about the Canadian seal hunt," Obama wrote to a member of People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, in the letter, dated April 13, 2006.

"As you know, Canada annually opens its eastern waters to commercial seal hunting. The United States and European Union have been unified in their opposition to the slaughter of seals by passing legislation decades ago to restrict the sale of seal-based products within their borders," Obama wrote.

"I certainly believe in the spirit of these acts; the U.S. should not condone this recent Canadian action."

A PETA official said Obama's 2006 letter was "recently rediscovered in the files of a member who keeps very good records of our correspondence with the U.S. government."

The letter was released publicly today as part of a renewed PETA campaign that requests Obama renew his commitment to ending the Canadian seal hunt.

"The rediscovery of this letter came as a surprise. But we are not totally shocked by what Obama said because so far he has been very responsive on animal rights," said Dan Mathews, senior vice-president of PETA.

"But there is obviously an opportunity now for Obama to use his good office to renew and fulfill this pledge. We are anxious to hear a response from the White House."

Officials in Washington and Ottawa have yet to comment on the letter.

The only thing Obama was outraged about was having to waste about 20 mins of life talking to PETA (People with Extra Time Available). Here is how that conversation will go between the two leaders.....

Obama "Hey Steve, can you guys end that seal hunt thing?".....

Harper "Hey Bama, can you guys pay us the $6 billion in back fees from NAFTA that the International Arbitrator agreed to and you are legally obligated to pay?".

I give you Liberals a hint....The same answer will be used to both questions.

I'd love to hear PETA's definition of a "humane" seal hunt. :)

Here's the actual press release from PETA. Notice the overblown and misleading catch phrases of "seal slaughter" (instead of seal hunt) "worldwide outcry", and then to read the PETA VP state that, "It's rare to see the world unite around a single issue like it has for this one..." and then proceed to list examples of the world not, in fact, united around this issue. Unless the EU, 2 US Senators, and Putin is all that it takes for the world to be united.

I love the last paragraph. It's written in such a way that it is inconceivable that such a thing could happen, yet OMG! it does. The wording is just genius. The cute, adorable little Baby seal fur...soooo soft, then WHAM! -- a violent mob with picks and clubs await on the ice to kill the babies in front of their wailing mothers! OMG! The Horror!

Washington
-- President Barack Obama, who expressed "outrage" over the Canadian seal hunt as a senator (in a letter released today by PETA), is being urged to bring that same spirit to the Oval Office and demand that the Canadian government heed the worldwide outcry to end the annual seal slaughter.

Writes PETA Senior Vice President Dan Mathews, "It's rare to see the world unite around a single issue like it has for this one: The E.U. is considering a ban on seal-pelt imports, two U.S. senators have introduced a bipartisan resolution urging Canada to end the slaughter, and even Vladimir Putin--bear hunter--has condemned the seal slaughter as a 'bloody business' that should have been banned years ago. Won't you add your voice to the chorus?"

Each year, migrating female seals must stop on Canada's eastern ice floes to give birth. Because baby seal fur is so soft, a violent mob carrying picks and clubs waits on the ice for the mothers and their pups. The sealers kill the babies in front of their wailing mothers and then sell the pelts. This year, the Canadian government will allow sealers to beat and skin approximately 338,200 seals for a product that nobody needs.

Just think of the devastation that would be created by not hunting these seals...The depleted fish stocks would eventually hurt Maines fishing industry and there'd be a bailout of the commercial fishing industry.

The only thing peta would do different is they would dispose of the carcesses in a dumpster, like their members do with dogs in their care after they kill them..........

Just another terrorist group..............as for barrys letter, at the point he wrote it, it was simply pandering to one group, something we all know all politicians do, now lets see how he responds to the renewed efforts and arm twisting........

Ah.... yea right..... there should be enough predators to take care of the seals and keep the population in check.... oh that's right they have been hunting sharks commercially and their populations are down.... maybe if we hunt dolphins instead it would be better..... we would have more tuna.....

We already bailout the fishing industry in some parts of the country. Look at what happened when they stopped commercial fishing in Washington and more recently Maine. They all get disaster relief funding for some un-Godly reason because they can't fish. Maybe because I can't drive a truck due to lack of freight, I should get disaster relief money too.....

Are you sure he wasn't talking about Buffy and Jodi's hair?

*LOL* I meant this Cabot....

Giovanni Caboto (c. 1450 – c. 1498)[2], known in English as John Cabot, was an Italian navigator and explorer commonly credited as the first European to discover the mainland of North America,[1] in 1497, apart from Norseman Leif Ericson's landing (c. 1003). The Canadian and United Kingdom government's official position is that he landed on the island of Newfoundland

If you grab a quote off of Wiki, please take the bracketed foot notes out of it. ;)

Instead of this

Try this

A little side note, the Giovanni Caboto Club in Windsor has some pretty good Canadian Mafia weddings there.

You can, actually. In Ohio you can get food stamps when freight is slow...

I wonder if seals taste like Chicken? Like chicken of the sea......I feel there is no reason to kill baby seals just for fur. Veal is nothing but a baby cow, yet that is very good sorce of meat. Now maybe if they would take the baby seal meat and feed the homeless, no one would say anything.

Interesting point Eddie...no one ever discusses what they do with the bodies...I am sure some are used especially by the Indians and Eskimos on the hunt...
Oscar Meyer would prolly take the bodies...add them to the weiner...ya know it already says .."meat by-products" on the package!!

I understand it is a big waste, the info I got was from an hunter, not PETA. The cost of bringing them to somewhere that they can drop them off is too much to bare. It is not a cost of money but the time to prep the carcasses thanks to the Canadian government because they are afriad it will be used for human consumption.

I doubt that they rot, there are plenty of air borne scavengers around. Bet they "clean up". Layoutshooter

Like I said, PETA would just dump them in a dumpster somewhere as they do with dogs they get tried of caring for......and they don't even use the fur for anything, just just kill them and dump them........
