bubblehead;2..I don't agree that just because Walmart asks us to leave that it's because they "don't like" our kind or that they "don't want us around."[/quote said:
If you think that they mean something other than "they don't want us around" when they ask us to leave, how about if next time they ask you to leave, you hang around, and let us know how that works?

Walmart at exit 32 on 265 in Louisville near the Ford plant has the height restriction at all their entrances like in a drive thru. I think the limit is either 8'6" or 9'0" but I have stayed there all night myself with out incident.

Guess they are more van and sprinter friendly. :p

Since I got married my father in law is a security guard a Wal-Mart in Smithfield, NC, he use to run off trucks that parked on the lot, and I sat here at home & showed him the problem truck drivers have with parking & safety, I even had him browse a few threads here on EO, he now has a new understanding of some of the hardships drivers encounter on the road like being 2nd class citizens to most public. He now informs trucks where to park, and if he notices cars parked in those areas he will make them move. Also if he sees you up at late hours he will even bring you a cup of coffee at his expense. All it took was a little time to explain and he now enjoys talking to drivers.

OMG...

Umm...

I was just trying to use a bit of sarcastic humor to introduce the thread. I'm not suggesting that it's 1952 and we're trying to use the wrong water fountain. My apologies to those that didn't get it.

Once in upper michigan, A security gaurd tried kicking me out of the parking lot.. It was a HUGE parking lot and I parked my st. truck in the far left space. I went into the store and told the manager that I am (along with many other drivers) a "customer" too. He smiled and said "Sam Walton, would want to make you happy, so you may stay the night sir" I thought that was kind of cute he said that...(and a bit corny)... but bottom line was this manager understood the importance of keeping me as a customer. Because of that I spent about a 150.00 that day on food, clothes there.. As I was walking out with a full cart of merchandise.. he came up to me and thanked me... WOW.. I thought... That was a great experiance.

Never apologize for a misunderstood punch line, and the reference is more than a joke really it's how it is in allot of places. we are 2 class citizens.Granted yes allot of the Super Trucker's behavior have fuels these feeling no denying that, but being all lumped in the same basket is wrong.

New to A Straight truck, this is a piece of cake compared to the tractor trailer we are use to. Never had a problem with any WalMart. It helps of coarse to pick up the trash other selfish Drivers throw out of their trucks. Employees and store managers hate picking up after drivers, and notice when you do. We have been allowed to park at the unused docks when lot parking was not allowed because of the city. Let them know you are spending money with them and are willing to clean up after those who don't and you will be surprised what they will do for you

In all my years of running, I've had two "run-ins" with Walmart. Both were filthy California border stores, one in Santa Ana, the other in Calexico. I do spend a lot of money in Walmart since I shop there often and almost always spend decent money when laying over. (I estimate I spend between 300-500 on an average month between food, supplies, pet food, and my team driver spent almost the same). Anyway, in Santa Ana last year the night before Christmas Eve, I went to the store at approx. 1900hrs. I see, a sign by Santa Clara City going in, that says No Overnight Truck Parking, (fine with me I had just finished a delivery there and was heading to Ontario, when I decided to buy some last minute gifts for the family, although I would love to see Santa Clara deliveries boycotted...but anyway), I park in the far reaches of a dirty parking lot, (to be fair they probably had been slammed by the holiday), and after shutting things down, and cleaning up for a minute and getting my wallet and hat, I start to exit the truck, when a "security guard" rolls up, yellow light flashing, to my door and starts berating me IN BROKEN FRIGGIN ENGLISH/SPANISH about me not being able to park there after 12:00 AM Midnight. Yelling at me nasty like I'm a kid. (I'm in my mid 40s). His age prevented really from really losing it there. I told him it would be a good idea to get away from my truck, I am a customer, and asked him if he realized it was 7PM. (I wasn't that nice, I used some choice words.). I keep every Walmart receipt, because they are decent about returns. I gathered them all up from the past 6 months, (over 2000 dollars) went in and had a talk with the manager, showed him all my receipts, indicated I would not purchase anything at that store, and was calling corporate in the morning. I asked him why I wasn't allowed to shop at 7PM to buy his chinese crap, since they had let me buy all this other stuff over the last 6 month. (He apologized and blamed the "contracted guard", (who, I'm sure who was not a citizen, so I guess, I have to deal with his native customer service "culture") but I was so ticked off, I just left before I got in trouble. I called corporate in the morning, and they apologized and had that district manager call and apologize and say the guards would be retrained. It's only happened in these two stores, to me, so I accepted the WalMart apology. Later, I'll tell you about Calexico which was worse.

I see nobody has mentioned N.Augusta, SC, Garland, TX, (city ordinance), Olive Branch, MS, (no overnights), or Jackson, TN. Across the street from N.Augusta, there's a K-mart that permits parking. To the east of the Garland store there is parking at Denny's and you're outside of the city limits. In Jackson you go around past the Sam's to the closed down Circuit City (also known as the Jeanie Silk Memorial Truckstop in some circles :p).
My favorite Walmart parking experience would be Del Rio, TX. The security guard escorts you over to the gardening side of the store, and extols the virtues of Rudy's BBQ right next door.

I believe we should start a letter writing campaign to our incoming Secretary of Transportation and address the lack of parking within the industry.

Two rest areas in Indiana along US 30 just west of Fort Wayne are closing due to the age of the buildings and cost of upkeep and both of those are always loaded with trucks even on the on and off ramps. So if you want to start writing contact Mitch Daniels Gov. LOL
I think the rest stops are controlled by the state not the federal government, I may be wrong

Like some have suggested, go talk with a store manager first. Once they see you are going to become a customer and are being nice enough to ask, most will give the OK or tell you another place to park overnight in town.
My hubby has never been asked to leave a parking lot, in fact let me tell you a true story.
A couple weeks ago we held over in Brownsville Texas. Pulled into one of the many Wally Worlds to stock up. Johnny first flagged down a security person to let them know what we were doing. Man said no problem, in fact, he would actually keep an eye on the truck.
When we returned the guard pulled up for just conversation.
Johhny saw a Golden Corral down the road and asked if we could leave the truck while we went and got a bite to eat.
Now here is a really cool part. The guard asked if we wanted a ride to the restaurant!!!!!
We politly said no thank you, we like the exercise.
Again, he was there when we returned and hubby was telling how it looked like we would be staying overnight.
He said no overnight parking here but gave directions to another Wally World that actually had an area just for overnight big rig and RV parking.
Stayed there a couple days with no problems.

Another good experience was at the Wally World in Emporia Kansas.
Truck was parked there for 10 daytime hours and no problems.

The Walmart in Florence, KY seems to be truck friendly - but you have to park on the oil change/tire side of the building.

The Wal Mart in Adrian, MI (my home town) used to allow truck parking but it got out of hand and the trucks were tearing up the parking lot so they kicked them out. The problem, according to the mgr we talked to, is that the parking lot is not built to withstand the weight of the trucks. The only overnight truck parking in Adrian is at a tiny little BP and they charge you.

I remember when if you parked in a Wal Mart, you never got kicked out no matter what time it was. At that time I was a Company Driver and was delivering to the Wal Mart in Sidell, LA. in the front parking lot it had height restricing bars over each enterance that would allow a Cargo van with a raised top, but no Motor Homes, or T/T, So I parked my truck in the receiving parking lot in the back and went shopping and then went to sleep for the delivery in the AM About 3 AM a Security guard knocked on my door and said I had to leave and go accross the street and park at the 76 truck stop at the time. I said that they were completely filled up and there wasn't a spot available when I pulled in.
and I told him that I was delivering there at the Store. He said it did not matter, No sleeping on property. So I left and went across the street and found a space.

The next moring I delivered. after I unloaded, I went back to the 76, and Called Bentonville, and I was called back, they said go over and see the Manager, I was given a $25.00 Walmart gift card for my problem.

Heres a better one, I was in the front parking lot of another store, and the manager who came in for the Day shift came up to the truck woke me up, and said I had to leave. There were no signs that said "No Truck Parking", I forgot where it was, but as I was ready to leave a big black limo pulled into the parking lot. The gentlemen who was in the Limo got out of the car, and come over to the truck, he asked me if I was having a problem. I said the Manager of the store just told me to leave. He said stay right there. The next thing I know I see the Manager who told me to leave get in his car, and he was gone. He was fired. It seems it was Sam Walton himself. At the time I never had seen a picture of him so I did not know who he was, he came back to the truck, and said anytime you have a problem staying at any walmart store, Just call the main office, I said thank you and left cause I had a delivery. but that was in the early 90's

Again, If Sam Walton knew what was going on today, he would roll over in his Grave. God Forbid, because he catered to the trucks that deliver to the store, and the RV's that purchase in the store. HE WANTED ALL THERE BUSINESS. NOW SINCE HE PASSED AWAY EVERYTHING HAS CHANGED.
