I mean, he needs the teleprompter to talk to a CLASSROOM of 6th graders!?!? LOL....this guy really is full himself...perpared statements read from a teleprompter to kids.....guess he really isn't the great speaker some think he is....and for sure he needed the "wedge" speakers and the offical "Presidential" podium and the Secret Service agent behind him! You never know when a "spitball" from a "terrorist" 6th grader may come his way....LOL All of this in a CLASSROOM, not the Auditorium....LOL...

well i guess someone pulled the bloggers link, so here are a few others that cover it:

Dennis,

You (and anyone else who commented negatively on this) missed the relevant point completely: the speech was being filmed (video'ed actually) - observe the shotgun mic on a boompole in the upper right portion of the frame in the video here:

Obama Uses Teleprompter In Elementary Class Speech?

Any professional producer worth their salt would insist that a high government official - particularly the President of the United States in this case - use a prompter if at all possible - if the intent was to produce anything which resembled a professional product (particularly one intended for later distribution to the media), and they had access to that level of equipment.

BTW, reading off a teleprompter flawlessly isn't necessarily a cakewalk - some folks can't even do it (it's harder with some models of prompters more so than others)

In this case, as in many others, it's a case of the uninformed looking at something and commenting, without realizing what it is that they are seeing.

How in the world did anyone ever speak in public prior to teleprompters? Today's orators cannot carry a candle to those of years gone by. Obama and the rest are just jokes. Take away their crutches and they are all toast. I bet most could not write their own work if forced to under pain of death. Puppets one and all.

Carefully and deliberately, if they were at all wise. Sometimes they even practiced.

Today's orators cannot carry a candle to those of years gone by.
Undoubtedly true .....

Part of it comes from the insistence by the media and the pundits for perfection from those who clearly are imperfect.

Part of it is also an intolerance of the deliberation it might take for someone to form their thoughts into words on the fly.

Can you imagine a tv talking head waiting for more than 5 or 10 seconds while someone considers carefully their response to a question put to them. For someone like Chris Matthews, Sean Hannity, or Bill O'Reilly their head would probably explode .... they certainly wouldn't be able to keep their own yap shut for much longer than that, in the face of silence.

Today it's more about appearances than anything.

Obama and the rest are just jokes. Take away their crutches and they are all toast. I bet most could not write their own work if forced to under pain of death. Puppets one and all.
I don't know that I would go that far - from the few times that I have observed him, I would say Obama is actually fairly good at it (which is not to say that content of what he says is necessarily good)

I don't know, every time I hear Obama talking off the cuff it is more like a comedy act. Take away the "word" mmmmmmmmm and the "word" ahhhhhhhhhhhh and the words "I" and "me", you would take away most of what he says. As to the content, that is not a joke, it is down right scary.

Re: To o Funny!!

There is another problem with these politicians today. They seldom, if ever, write their own speeches. They have no "fire" when they speak. No zeal. No passion. They are not speaking their minds but the minds of others.

When they speak they seldom inspire others. They "tell" us what "they" are going to do for us or to us. That kind of speaking will never bring out the best in man. It belittles him.

A good leader would do the exact opposite. They would write their own speeches. Their ideas. They would not "tell" us what "they" need to do for us they would inspire us to solve our own problems and the Nations. They would strive to bring out the greatness in others. The success of those who they represent would be the measure of their success, not the bills that they ram through, taxes imposed or years that they spend in office. The success of the Nation, from the bottom up, allowed and encouraged by their speech.

T. Roosevelt, Taft, Wilson, Harding and Hoover were really the last. Hoover and Wilson wrote a lot beside speeches, both were published a lot. Oh Roosevelt was also an "author" of many books and beleive it or not he didn't have a ghost writers.

In the later part of the century, ah ... maybe ... no one! Kennedy and Eisenhower had a good staff, LBJ and Nixon, well ... Reagan? good delivery with his directors ...
