One of the biggest reasons was based on the problems that the states had in selecting a senator. Many states didn't have laws set to explain how or what the process was and many states were deadlocked in the selection, which put a strain on the congress.
There are a lot of other reasons why it got ratified, it was the start of the Progressive movement in this country that the idea cames form while some of it was supported by Hearst and others were based on the political reforms, like the Wisconsin Idea.
I think it was mainly because of the congress ignoring the people at that time, we just came off of the most destructive election in our history and the mode of the people was they just didn't care.
I think it's time has passed and there needs to be a reaffirmation of the 10th amendment, a repeal of the 17th and a recall amendment ratified (another progressive idea) to get this country back on track.
I watched one of the BBC overseas channels this morning, it was from France and they are just floored at what happened with Dingel and Mckowski (what ever her name is). They had some footage about a "town hall" meeting last week where there was some lady in a wheel chair who just lost it with her representitive. The french were amazed that we were so upset that we would scream at our elected officials. Imagine if there was a recall amendment what would be happening right now.
You all do know what a real Town Hall meeting is all about?
It was defined by some guy named Fred Allen who had Town Hall Tonight show which is copied today by SNL and others.
