The Negro Laughing Song

Since everyone seems to be so obsessed with the topic of being black I'd like to offer up to you the first song that was ever recorded by Thomas Edison. It is a song that was written and performed by a man named "George Washington Johnson" who was a former slave. This man was a true talent and quickly rose from the ranks of being a slave to become one of the most respected musicians of his time. In the link below you can read more about this mans autobiography. But more importantly I hope you enjoy the tune.

Hawk, he didn't mention Obama.....but even if that's what he meant, it's not the folks who voted for Obama creating the jokes about the new style at the White House (BBQ smoker on the lawn), the Secret Service 'Pimpmobile' etc - right?
As much as I disliked Bush, I never referred to him as 'the shrub' in public!

Interesting, considering the topic at hand, that you'd paint with such a broad stroke.

I personally find this and other topics of this type offensive.

It seems that this forum has become the home of people who aren't happy unless they can make fun of someone different from them. It is a shame. This could be a place for us to discuss issues of importance. Instead, it has turned into a place of people with smal minds to publish their garbage.

I dunno ... I'm not sure that the intention of the original poster was to demean a particular race ...... in fact, it might have been quite the opposite ..... maybe to make the point that you raise below - in response to some of the other crappola that gets posted on EO ...... dunno .....

It seems that this forum has become the home of people who aren't happy unless they can make fun of someone different from them.
Either that, or just advocate "Killing them all .... and letting God sort them out ..."

After all, why bother to just make fun of someone .... when ya can just kill 'em instead ..... ?

It is a shame. This could be a place for us to discuss issues of importance. Instead, it has turned into a place of people with smal minds to publish their garbage.
Well .... yeah ...... pretty much .....

Thanks for caring enough to speak up.

Great find! I belong to a organization that as a charitable foundation that supports and finds gigs for old blue, forlk and black artist, most that never got past a few great songs in regional areas.

If you want to hear and purchase some of the great old songs from back in the day, check out this site. Even if you don't join or buy anything, its a great site for news and stories and happenings of some of americas great forgotten songster!! you will also find a few great audio clips and links also.

It is a good place to offer up a charitable dondation also if you can see your way to doing so. but even a purchase of anything there helps the cause.

One of the first things I learned on EO is that "The Soapbox" is not for the faint of heart! :D

I thought the post was informative and interesting. The song ain't bad either.

Other then:
Since everyone seems to be so obsessed with the topic of being black
(Which is not an offensive statement to me, but could be a debatable topic to some) This information could have come straight out of a history book...

Gee Cheri, it seems to me that calling "Bush" a "shrub" would have 1. been a great play on his name and 2. much nicer that most of what I have heard over the last 8 years. I heard him blamed for STARTING hurricanes to kill blacks and all kinds of other stupid stuff. Obama had better be ready for it. If he can't handle being made fun of and called names he has no business being in that office. (I don't think he should be there but my arguements are based solely on his lack of experience and his Marxism, that is MY right) I will be on him like White on Snow for the next 4 years, not his race, his foolishness. My First Amendment allows me too. By the way, I did not like Bush for the most part either.

Scott1, a large number of Americans have never been taught history and most of what they were taught was a watered down version. I was disgusted by what I read in U.S. History books in the late '90's. I can't even imagine the "Bull" that is written in them now or what I expect to see in the near future. What a shame that we just can't write history the way it happened and let the reader determine if they like what happened or not. I hate the lies being taught about this country, the greatest place on the face of the globe.

Looks like an interesting piece of history to me, in addition to being a tribute to the success of one of the first black recording artists. Granted the caption under the picture isn't one that would be acceptable under today's standards, but this sheet music cover was obviously done over 100 years ago and this is the way the publishers and Mr. Johnson promoted his vaudeville act and his music.

So true. There are a number books out on the subject. Some of the "facts" I have seen printed in text books is offensive to me. Some are out and out lies, not just watered down. Luckily whatever was pumped into my head was so boring it has long since been forgotten. The only history I have retained is from personal interest subjects of study.

I too have been offended by some accounts of history. I have read total lies about events that I had VERY personal experiences in. The accounts of the so-called "Cold War" or what I call WW3 are so far from what really happened it is beyond belief. I am sure that many of my now dead friends are rolling over in thier graves over what was said about thier sacrifice and how we, as a nation, are giving up all of the freedoms that they died for. They died for nothing. What a shame. Layoutshooter
