Seems a friend of mine wants to be "just like Mike" well I mean "dabluzman" (all except for the part of sleeping with my wife) and get into the expediting biz.
He has been watching Linda and my success??? over the past two years and feels this may be for him.

Okay now here is where we split on being "just like"........

He doesnt have a cdl nada zippo zilch. ( he is studing to get a B + hazmat)
But, he did find some non cdl opportunities.
He ran this one by me to get my opinion.

Chevy van, no sleeper, diesel 20-25 mpg.
leased to a smaller carrier serving midwest no canada.
60/40 split he pays fuel and gets fsc.
He will need three to four weeks expense money ( including fuel and tolls)
as there isnt a fuel card available so the driver needs to cover costs until
settlements start to roll in.
Owner says 800 to 900 gross pay b4 fuel per week on average.

So not being a sprinter man and not knowing the costs involved in operating
one I used what I have learned from driving a D and DR.

I told him, DONT DO IT.

So he didnt.

Comments please.

IF he were to run a 1,000 miles a week at .90 fsc included..which is high with some carriers...that would make his $900 gross....1000 miles @ 20 mpg is 50 gallons say 2 bucks even for calculation ease...thats $100 bucks easy.

60% of 900= $540-$100=$440 a week....who does tolls? Does he eat?

Some cargo vans ain;t getting 500 miles a week....soooooo

you take it from there.....

It depends. Since he wants to be just like you, I assume he would be taking a guitar with him. What kind of guitar would that be?

well, if he really wanted to be like me, he would be holding a 1955 Gibson ES125 as I am.
this is my very 1st guitar, got in 1959. still have it, just dont take it out to much anymore.
I have with me on the truck a Godin electric w/ midi pu. I have a pod x3 to blow my ears out with headphones.
thanx for axing

I'd say - "Don't do it", also!

especially considering about 5 yrs ago - I was thinking about driving a van, and that was about waht the O/O told me I would be making. And after I crunched the various numbers (business/household/personal expenses)- I would've been waaaaaay better off working for McD's!

Hard to imagine how anybody driving for someone else in a van or sprinter is making it in this environment ..... tough enough if you own the vehicle

true enough and buying a new van right now would be crazy even if he was the owner. there are weeks of a grand and there are weeks of three hundred. recently more of the lower wage. might be more coming up also.

you blow harp in that truck also?(that is not dirty and that is not beer!)

Ken, you seeing some light at the end of the tunnel there ? :D

We made our last regular payment on the tractor (agricultural, not over-the-road) this month and have only the final settlement payment to make for May ..... finally.
