If they do fire one in that direction, Would it be a good thing (An end to their threats) or the worst thing possible (triggering problems between the US China and Russia). We seem to be on the same page with Russia and China now.

North Korea may fire a missile toward Hawaii
By HYUNG-JIN KIM, AP
SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea may fire a long-range ballistic missile toward Hawaii in early July, a Japanese news report said Thursday, as Russia and China urged the regime to return to international disarmament talks on its rogue nuclear program.

The missile, believed to be a Taepodong-2 with a range of up to 4,000 miles (6,500 kilometers), would be launched from North Korea's Dongchang-ni site on the northwestern coast, said the Yomiuri daily, Japan's top-selling newspaper. It cited an analysis by the Japanese Defense Ministry and intelligence gathered by U.S. reconnaissance satellites.

The missile launch could come between July 4 and 8, the paper said.

While the newspaper speculated the Taepodong-2 could fly over Japan and toward Hawaii, it said the missile would not be able to hit Hawaii's main islands, which are about 4,500 miles (7,200 kilometers) from the Korean peninsula.

A spokesman for the Japanese Defense Ministry declined to comment on the report. South Korea's Defense Ministry and the National Intelligence Service — the country's main spy agency — said they could not confirm it.

Tension on the divided Korean peninsula has spiked since the North conducted its second nuclear test on May 25 in defiance of repeated international warnings. The regime declared Saturday it would bolster its nuclear programs and threatened war in protest of U.N. sanctions taken for the nuclear test.

U.S. officials have said the North has been preparing to fire a long-range missile capable of striking the western U.S. In Washington on Tuesday, Gen. James Cartwright, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said it would take at least three to five years for North Korea to pose a real threat to the U.S. west coast.

CBS - Obama Lauds North Korea Sanctions
President Barack Obama and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak met in Washington on Tuesday for a landmark summit in which they agreed to build a regional and global "strategic alliance" to persuade North Korea to dismantle all its nuclear weapons. Obama declared North Korea a "grave threat" to the world and pledged that the new U.N. sanctions on the communist regime will be aggressively enforced.

In Seoul, Vice Unification Minister Hong Yang-ho told a forum Thursday that the North's moves to strengthen its nuclear programs is "a very dangerous thing that can fundamentally change" the regional security environment. He said the South Korean government is bracing for "all possible scenarios" regarding the nuclear standoff.

The independent International Crisis Group think tank, meanwhile, said the North's massive stockpile of chemical weapons is no less serious a threat to the region than its nuclear arsenal.

It said the North is believed to have between 2,500 and 5,000 tons of chemical weapons, including mustard gas, phosgene, blood agents and sarin. These weapons can be delivered with ballistic missiles and long-range artillery and are "sufficient to inflict massive civilian casualties on South Korea."

"If progress is made on rolling back Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions, there could be opportunities to construct a cooperative diplomatic solution for chemical weapons and the suspected biological weapons program," the think tank said in a report released Thursday.

It also called on the U.S. to engage the North in dialogue to defuse the nuclear crisis, saying "diplomacy is the least bad option." The think tank said Washington should be prepared to send a high-level special envoy to Pyongyang to resolve the tension.

In a rare move, leaders of Russia and China used their meetings in Moscow on Wednesday to pressure the North to return to the nuclear talks and expressed "serious concerns" about tension on the Korean peninsula.

The joint appeal appeared to be a signal that Moscow and Beijing are growing impatient with Pyongyang's stubbornness. Northeastern China and Russia's Far East both border North Korea, and Pyongyang's unpredictable actions have raised concern in both countries.

After meetings at the Kremlin, Chinese President Hu Jintao joined Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in urging a peaceful resolution of the Korean standoff and the "swiftest renewal" of the now-frozen talks involving their countries as well as North and South Korea, Japan and the United States.

"Russia and China are ready to foster the lowering of tension in Northeast Asia and call for the continuation of efforts by all sides to resolve disagreements through peaceful means, through dialogue and consultations," their statement said.

The comments — contained in a lengthy statement that discussed other global issues — included no new initiatives, but it appeared to be carefully worded to avoid provoking Pyongyang. In remarks after their meetings, Medvedev made only a brief reference to North Korea, and Hu did not mention it.

South Korea's Lee said Wednesday in Washington that was essential for China and Russia to "actively cooperate" in getting the North to give up its nuclear program, suggesting the North's bombs program may trigger a regional arms race.

"If we acknowledge North Korea possessing nuclear programs, other non-nuclear countries in Northeast Asia would be tempted to possess nuclear weapons and this would not be helpful for stability in Northeast Asia," Lee said in a meeting with former U.S. officials and Korea experts, according to his office.

I am leaning toward let them shoot it. That would end that gov't once and for all. I just wonder if they did and we strike back would it be conventional bombing or Nukes?

Since they border China Russia and S. korea, we may have to just use conventional methods.

Regardless this sure seems to be getting close to a boiling point.

Can we sell Hawaii to China for our debt? It seems there is only one thing there that will really be missed.

I'd rather give them some useless piece of land, Texas.

Texas is far from useless, it is actually more productive of a state than Hawaii has ever been.

The only thing that Hawaii has given us so far, outside of their "native" movement is those macadamia nuts but even then they come from other places cheaper. They can be grown in Texas by the way.

Yea, give it to China, let them deal with it....

hearing Kim Jong Il in a very effiminate falsetto voice highly suggestive of San Francisco saying "Oh, my my my, goodness me, I'm afraid now. That Obama just scares me sooooooo much. He's just so tough. Oh, but isn't he just a hottie when he's mad".

NK tested an earlier model of their ICBM's in i think 1993, it fell in the waters off the coast of hawaii then...NK said the notified the US gov, but the Military in hawaii said they were never told anything, and when they found that missle in the air, they are said to be as scared as they could have been because they didn't know what it was.....so this is nothing new...

I fully expect Kim to test more missles and this coming one will not be the last...kim isn't worried about barry at all, and don't think for a minute that China doesn't know what Kim is doing, russia is not or friend and they are just going thru the motions with the UN sanctions, they couldn't care less.....

But even before this missle becomes an issue, the fact that the pentagon is tracking a ship flagged from NK and having a history of carrying weapons, if anyones trys to forcefully stop and or board that ship in the open seas or even at port (ports can fall under the laws of the country) I wouldn't bet against Kim dumping a few small missles into SK, japan and maybe into the DMZ......

If NK shoots a missle towards Hawaii and hits it Obama will most likely apologize for it being in the way. Seems he is apologizing for a lot here lately.

Any long range ICBM that NK sends that way will have to go over japan 1st. It won't be a "active" warhead..it will be a "test"... if it is not taken out before it get into the hawaian air space, it will splash in to the ocean, he isn't going to fire on the islands, not yet anyhow...this is jst to "T" barry off....Now if the US or anyone from the UN countries try to board that ship, then all bets are off.. he will attack, just to save face and make good on what he said he would do....

What is needed is to inform Russia, China AND the UN that we intend to take out North Korea's launch pads and nuke plants. We invite them to join us in enforcing the UN resolutions that are not now being enforced. It may be too late. Been putzing around with this for 50 years. How stupid.

No Layout that will cause us to have Iraq II, the war with Korea. Our press will have a field day with it, the left will turn on Obama like they did LBJ when the casualties reach 50,000 in the first few weeks of the war. Then the UN again will call it an illegal war that wasn't properly sanctioned by the UN and the Europeans will be p*ssed off because they were helping NK build their defensive technology, more specifically france and germany.

NO war is won without troops on the ground..as far as Kim!!what does he have to lose?? its a win win situation for him...he is dying....he figures what does he got to lose...his people are repressed..(obviously they have no value to him, just numbers) since they have hated us so long, why not go out with a bang..surely it will be in the history books for as long as we still inhabit earth...he will be a hero to a lot of the muslim population..(he dared to defy the mighty united states) and possibly caused massive amounts of casualties, proving that the united states can be taken down a notch..and giving inspiration to all the third world countries out there..that they can take small chinks out of our armor...i see no reason for him not to go thru with his threats...will we nuke back???probably not,we will think about the civilian population, which is probably innocent,(after all there probably isnt one million north koreans who wouldnt defect to south korea if given the chance)

Things could get interesting depending on how the US wants to proceed with the NK boar they are currently tracking (shadowing, actually). It left a NK port the other day and is currently in the Pacific off China.

The current UN Resolution says you can ask the captain for permission to board, but doesn't give you the right to board if he says no. Not that I would agree that the US National Security should be limited by a UN Resolution (if we feel it's in our National Security interest to board it, then board it), but if the US goes along with the Resolution, they'll probably ask, be told no, and then they'll request the captain head to port, which he will then say no to. But, the captain will have to refuel somewhere, and then it becomes a diplomatic cat and mouse game of trying to pressure the fueling port into refusing to fuel them unless they can be boarded.

The real problems come if we ask to board it and they say no, and then we end up not eventually boarding it. That's the PR that Kim wants to be able to show he can stand up to the US, to say no and we do what he says.

Then again, that will be nothing compared to boarding it and finding paper rolls. If we board it, we'd better be really sure of what we're gonna find.

Personally, I think we should just a hire a few Somalis to harass them. :D
