Sorry...it was your dads money, not yours....he forfeited that the day he died...thats not the governments problem?

I am sorry for your loss...please don't take this personal...I think in our best interests it is time for me to withdraw from this discussion...

See that is where you are missing the point. It was our families money not the goverments. It was money that could not fund life insurance or whatever my parents chose to use it for. The loss was long ago but thankyou for the words. Understand I am not offended by your views on the subject just bewildered.

The point I'll give you is I ALSO agree that one should be able to opt out....if one choses to fund a retirement plan privately that should be ones own choice....

Maybe, originally it was our money held by the government, but not anymore. What's ours is theirs and what's theirs is theirs. The system is broke and is only going to get worse with all the Baby Boomers that are just about ready to come aboard. Anybody who trusts the government with their money might as well have invested it with Bernie Madoff.

I was saying you have to be American born for the Presidency
I guess under the BNA you don't have to follow that.

Un-employment insurance premiums are stolen from the employers. S.S. is stolen from the worker AND the employers. Then the government spends it. What a joke.

The Dumb-O-Crats want CONTROL of the people. CONTROL their money and you control them. They are not there to look after you, just rule you. Their goal is to make you dependant on them. THEY SUCK!! Socialism is the PITS!!

OVM - so what do you propose we do with old widows that were homemakers? They may not have paid in to SSI themselves, but they most definitely worked. I don't know what the answer is, but I think we owe it to our senior citizens to support them--not be upset because they've outlived their usefulness.

Cut off illegals, reduce foreign aid, stop implementing programs like cash for clunkers---do all of that before putting granny out in the street!

Actually my granny worked outside the home like most do these days and she had her own pension account...

BUT I'll concede the ones that chose not to work i'd give them 50% of the spouses income same as a divorce court would do...:D

Question? Does the US have a pension plan for those 65yrs of age that paid nothing?

Actually Yes, there is a plan. It is not a pension, pensions are something completely different and the word is used in England and Canada.

Social Security was a supplement, never meant to be the primary means of income for retired people.

The idea in the mid-30's was that with the advent of unions and pensions from unionization of the country, the person who retired say in 1955 would enjoy his pension from his union job and then use SS as a supplement to help with bills that were not covered. Back then, most of the expenses were related to housing and food with transportation being a secondary issue and so was cable and cruise vacations.

But this was all lost in the late 40's after the war when we had massive unemployment and the shift with a large number of people who got educated under the GI bill and moved into management where unions didn't cover them. A large amount of people saved for retirement but again a lot didn't and this is what we ended up.

I also think that the UAW set the example for all unions to follow and screwed themselves. UAW didn't follow the teamsters who actually controlled the pensions, the rank and file of the UAW just didn't care about retirement having the union to control it back when the subject was brought up in the late 60's. The workers deserved what they got and now we the tax payers are footing the bill for them. The teamsters haven't screwed us yet.
