Seniors Angry Over No Social Security Increase

For the lunchtime crowd at the White Plains Senior Center, it was very unappetizing news.

"We work all our lives, and now they want to cut back on the little bit they give us? I don't think that's right," said Mercedes Leis.

Every year since 1975, social security recipients have received a cost of living adjustment, known as a COLA.

"Each year that we get that little raise, that's a big help to us seniors, it really is," said Joan Narracci.

Last January the COLA was 5.8 percent, boosting the average monthly retiree check to $1,153.

But now, social security trustees are projecting there will be no cost of living adjustment for the next two years, supposedly because inflation is under control and not eroding retirees' buying power.

"I'm disappointed with it because we really need it, and things are hard out here. So I was really shocked when I heard it," said Patricia Diggs.

Seniors say while overall inflation may be in check, prescription drug and health care costs continue to grow, hitting seniors hard.

"Eeverything's going up, some things have to give, and we get hit just like anybody else," said Frank Roselle.

Some advocates say congress should ignore the inflation numbers and give social security recipients an increase anyway.

One group is suggesting a 1-percent cost of living hike or a one-time payment of $150.

Most seniors say even a little something would be better than the proposed nothing.
