More than 3 feet of snow fell in higher elevations of South Dakota's Black Hills as an early season blizzard caused havoc in the western part of the state.

The National Weather Service reported about 40 inches of snow in Lead and Deadwood, while in Spearfish, about 2 feet of snow had fallen by midday Thursday. Roads were covered with drifts up to 6 feet in Spearfish.

A National Weather Service observer reported 38.5 inches of snow just northeast of Deadwood.

"It's a raging blizzard out there," said Jeff Schild, a meteorologist with the NWS office in Rapid City.

The snow came down -- sideways might be a better description -- at a rate of 3 inches an hour overnight. It's slacked off to 1-2 inches an hour, Schild said late Thursday morning.

"It's still rolling here. It's still going on," he said. Wind gusts of 60 mph were still being reported late Thursday morning.

Downtown Rapid City reported a 78-mph wind gust late Wednesday.

We are not going to get snow, a bit of rain only. That storm will push a ton of divers down my way. I will be ready for them. I am working on my anchors for the new duck boat now. That is the last thing that needed to be done. Layoutshooter

Grand Electric Cooperative Manager Jerry Reisenauer reported there are approximately 1,200 to 1,400 people without power in his territory in northwestern South Dakota. “We do not know the extent of the damage,“ he said. “We’re unable to get anywhere to find out.”

Although the storm is expected to let up later Thursday, it will likely be Friday morning before crews can get out and start working on repairing the outages.

Reisenauer said the outages started late Wednesday night and continued throughout the night.

“The region hardest hit is everything from Highway 20 and south,” he said.

This includes rural residents of Bison, Maurine and Mud Butte some south and east of Buffalo.

Ever heard it? That's all I do. No one else hears it, apparently, cause it ain't happenin'. That, or they're just too slow and by the time they get here I'm gone. These two little doohickeys here are turnin' blue. Well, green, anyway. :D

No Turtle, I hunt the big water. Lake Erie and the Straights of Detroit. I do not shoot at people or turtles, we trap turtles in this area. There is a REALLY good bar just up the road from me called "Trappers". They serve Michigan reciepe turtle soup. They used to serve muskrat years ago when there were a lot of trappers in the area. Few trap now and the "rats" are becoming a problem. Fur prices are down so there is little incentive to do that much work for so little money. I have not trapped since '75 when I lost all my traps to a flood. I have never trapped turtles but............................ layoutshooter

I delivered in Mitchell, SD about 18:00. Snow and strong winds. After delivering I boogied east. The roads were still warm enough to melt the snow. Glad I didn't have to go any farther west.

Isn't that what made Alexander Fleming famous?
LOL No. In people, almost always men, they turn blue, or that's the old wife's tale (and isn't that an ironic twist of a phrase) . With turtles, it's green.

Now, if yours turn green, yeah, you'll owe Fleming a great big thank you. :D
