The CNN Special Investigations Unit drills down on the causes and the impact of the Fort Hood shootings at 8 p.m. ET Saturday on CNN TV.

Fort Hood, Texas (CNN) -- The police officer who ended the Fort Hood massacre by shooting the suspect is known as the enforcer on her street, a "tough woman" who patrolled her neighborhood and once stopped burglars at her house.

"If you come in, I'm going to shoot," Kimberly Munley told the would-be intruders last year.

It was Munley who arrived quickly Thursday at the scene of the worst massacre at an Army base in U.S. history, where 13 people were killed. She confronted the alleged gunman, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, and shot him four times. Munley was wounded in the exchange.

That's just like her, friends and family say.

"I just felt more protected knowing she was on my street," neighbor Erin Houston said.

Munley, the mother of a 3-year-old girl, lives on a street where a lot of homes are vacant because so many residents are deployed at war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"We sleep a lot safer knowing she's on the block," said Sgt. William Barbrow, another neighbor.

When Bryan Munley heard that his sister-in-law thwarted the alleged gunman in a shootout, he wasn't surprised.

"There's nothing that stands in her way. It completely makes sense that she did what she did," he said from Downingtown, Pennsylvania. "It was amazing. Without her, there would have been a lot more people killed."

He added, "She is definitely a tough woman."

Munley, 34, is being treated for her wounds. Her father, former Carolina Beach, North Carolina, Mayor Dennis Barbour, said his daughter is doing well.

"Her efforts were superb," said Col. Steven Braverman, the base hospital commander.

Lt. Gen. Bob Cone, Fort Hood's commanding general, described Munley as a "trained, active first responder" who acted quickly after she "just happened to encounter the gunman."

"Really a pretty amazing and aggressive performance by this police officer," he said.

Cone said Munley and her partner responded "very quickly" to the scene -- reportedly in about three minutes.

On social networking sites, she was lauded for her actions. One Facebook fan page was called "Sgt. Kimberly Munley: A Real American Hero" and had more than 1,400 members.

Twitter list: Keep up with who we're following

"My prayers for a fast recovery as well as my sincere thanks of an outstanding job," one person wrote. One woman added, "U got some brass balls, girl ... u r my hero!!!!"

Authorities say Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, opened fire at a military processing center at Fort Hood on Thursday, killing 13 and wounding 30 others.

Cone was asked on CNN's "American Morning" whether Munley's shots brought down the assailant and stopped him from shooting.

"That's correct," Cone said. "The critical factor here was her quick response to the situation."

Bryan Munley said Munley is married to his brother, Staff Sgt. Matthew Munley. He said Matthew was in Downingtown, outside Philadelphia, visiting his family when the shootings happened. The couple, married since 2006, have a 3-year-old daughter named Jayden.

Bryan Munley said Matthew had recently been transferred to Fort Bragg in North Carolina and has done two tours in Iraq. Kimberly was trying to find a job in North Carolina and was hoping to move there soon, Matthew said.

Matthew was at Fort Bragg on Friday, trying to get a flight to Texas to see his wife.

A page on Twitter lists the name "Kim Munley" of Killeen, Texas, near Ford Hood. It has a photo of a female police officer with the name "Kim Munley" on her uniform.

Its bio blurb has particular resonance in the aftermath of the incident.

"I live a good life....a hard one, but I go to sleep peacefully @ night knowing that I may have made a difference in someone's life."

I believe "Heroine" should be the correct term in this instance. I guess these authors are recent graduates of our public school systems.

She deserves everything she gets, maybe even the medal of honor?

It has been reported several times about her on the news and radio, but I have to ask something and it may seem off the wall but if this happened on base, a base where access is restricted from the public and there is no mention that she is a reservist or an active MP, how is it that she was on the base to begin with (maybe day care or shopping?) and but more importantly where were the MPs in all of this?

She is a police officer for a private "military contractor" hired to work on the base....you know, like "blackwater", the rand corp....

So that raises another question but related to the one I asked, where are the MPs?

I am glad she was there, didn't hesitate like a lot of others would have.

Chances are since they are hiring "military contractors" the number of MP's has been reduced at the base (and probably on other bases also) and they are in use in "other places'......

Definitely a "hero". If only a somewhat better shot.

Leo,
I would want him alive and well so we can see him die. I think a public hanging is a better thing to do, firing squad and lethal injection is too humane.

Yet ANOTHER FORT HOOD HEROINE....

UPDATE: Random Lake soldier Amber Bahr recovering, praised for actions during Fort Hood shooting

UPDATE: Random Lake soldier Amber Bahr recovering, praised for actions during Fort Hood shooting | sheboyganpress.com | Sheboygan Press

A military spokesman has praised the heroics of Random Lake soldier Amber Bahr who helped other soldiers injured in the Fort Hood shooting before tending to her own wounds.

Lt. Gen. Bob Cone spoke highly of the 19-year-old Bahr's actions following the Thursday afternoon shootings at Fort Hood on NBC's "Today" show this morning.

“Amazing young lady. I spoke to her last night,” Cone said in the interview with Matt Lauer. “I think most notable about her is the fact that despite the fact she was shot, she assisted in helping other soldiers, put a tourniquet on a soldier, carried him out to medical care. And only after she had taken care of others, did she realize that she herself had been shot.”

Bahr was one of 30 soldiers injured in the shooting at the Texas base Thursday, which left 13 dead. Her family was originally told Bahr had been shot in the belly, but Bahr later told them she'd been shot in the back.

The family of a Random Lake soldier said Bahr was shot in the back and is undergoing tests.

Lisa Pfund says she was relieved when the Bahr finally called Thursday evening. Bahr told her she went running when shots rang out, and didn’t realize she’d been hit until she went to an emergency room.

Pfund says it’s a big relief to hear her daughter is OK, especially after the call she got from doctors after the shooting revealed few details.

Pfund was previously told her daughter was shot in the belly.

Authorities say Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan opened fire at the Texas base Thursday, killing 13 and injuring 30. Hasan was shot four times during the rampage. A military spokesman says he is hospitalized in stable condition.

If I knew absolutely he'd be publicly hung I'd want him alive as well. Once our Mullah in chief gets finished he won't even be executed.

Few bases are using MP's now, most are deployed. I am GLAD he is alive and I have NO problem executing him slowly and painfully, according to Muslium law if it is nasty enough. As to her shooting, she is most likely forced by some stupid law to carry a 9MM with so-called non-lethal ammunition.

I totally agree. save his life so the families of his victims can see him executed....but i am also afraid that Leo's accessment of how this will be buried by barry is right on......he won't let this become a muslum / islamic jihaddist issue that it really is, be won't risk making the islamist / muslums mad at him.....

I think that may cost Obama a lot if he steps in and tries to sway anyone.

It is like telling the justice department to go easy on McVie, it would cause a lot of emotional issues with the people that Obama is depending on.

The impact of this seems to be hitting home and driven through the media, they have been really hitting the entire matter hard and the air time it is getting seems to be done for a reason, maybe setting our new messiah up? I know the media is not all that please with the annoited one from some of the op-eds I have read lately.

One method of requesting a Criminal Record Check involves submitting a signed and notarized “Criminal record Name Search” form SP-167. The instructions are included with the document and the entire packet can be downloaded, printed or viewed on the Virginia State Police Forms page. That page is in a section on the website above and you will find it on the column on the left side of the web page.

Fortunately, unlike Blackwater (who has changed it's name in an effort to hide and get below the radar) she apparently hasn't been repeatedly involved in criminal activity, and the senseless killing of unarmed civilians ...

Nor does she likely work for a company who's head is a self-styled fundamentalist Christian mercenary whackjob who has been accused by two former employees of murdering or facilitating murder, in an effort to cover up his criminal activities:
