China tells US: Stop preaching on human rights

China has told the US to stop preaching on human rights, after the state department's annual report on the issue criticised China.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said the US should concentrate on its own rights issues and stop interfering.

Chinese authorities have launched a major crackdown on dissent recently.

Unveiling the report, US officials expressed particular concern over the recent arrest of the artist Ai Weiwei, an outspoken critic of the government.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also highlighted reports of other intellectuals and activists being "arbitrarily detained" in recent weeks.

Mr Hong said China was happy to talk about rights "on the basis of equality and mutual respect", but added that Beijing "resolutely opposes" meddling in other country's affairs.

"We advise the US side to reflect on its own human rights issues and not to position itself as a preacher of human rights," he said.

"[The US should] stop using the issue of human rights reports to interfere in other countries' internal affairs."

The state department's annual report criticising China, followed swiftly by a tough riposte from Beijing, is now a well-established diplomatic ritual.

But analysts say this year's tit-for-tat exchange has been sharpened by Beijing's crackdown on dissent.

The US report accused Beijing of stepping up restrictions on lawyers, activists, bloggers and journalists.

The Communist rulers were also accused of tightening controls on civil society and stepping up efforts to control the press and internet access.

The Beijing authorities also increased the use of forced disappearances, house arrest, and detention in illicit "black jails" to punish activists, petitioners and their families, the US report says.

Other countries accused of perpetrating serious rights violations in the report included Iran, Iraq, Burma, North Korea, the Ivory Coast, Zimbabwe, Ukraine, Russia and Belarus

As horrendous as the Chi-comms are, they have a point. Our gummint does things like extraordinary rendition; asset forfeiture when one carries what they consider "too much cash," even when the person stopped is never charged with a crime; torture; punishing doctors who prescribe what they call "too much" pain medication, even when the patient is terminal; violation of state's rights; routine violation of every one of the Bill of Rights except the 3rd (which they'll get to, given enough time); denial of medical marijuana when it's what helps a cancer patient keep his food down; the PATRIOT Act; porno scanners at the airports; internal "Papiers, bitte" checkpoints... The list is endless.

Maybe our own gummint should get their own house in order before they tell someone else about human rights.

I agree, when we clean up our act, than we can start complaining about others. Like our support for the sex trade and human trafficking through our border - it seems we are just hearing about it in the media but not enough to worry the country, many think it is a human right's violation to round up invaders and deport them but miss the fact that we still have slavery here.

Until it is revealed that our gummint has torture chambers in dark basements at Ft Leavenworth.........

Until I start having Uncles and Cousins disappear in the middle of night never to be seen again by gummint goon squads dressed in black over something they said against the gummint in an open forum, such as a rally or on the internet........

And until our gummint starts shooting protesters outside the gates of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, I say "SHUT THE HELL UP" China with regards to advising America on what "basic human rights" actually are.

Hell, I'll say the same thing to anyone to that agrees with China's stance. Hear what I'm saying AMonger...................

Our gummint is known to fly individuals to countries that do have such torture chambers, expressly for the purpose of having them tortured, so they can say, "We don't torture." If you do that, you do torture, just dishonestly and indirectly. In addition, our gummint is known to practice water boarding.

Until I start having Uncles and Cousins disappear in the middle of night never to be seen again by gummint goon squads dressed in black over something they said against the gummint in an open forum, such as a rally or on the internet........

When that starts happening, it'll be too late to speak up.

I'm reading The Gulag Archipelago now. I suggest you do the same. You might get a preview of what's coming here.

Unquestionably, China goes above and beyond what our gummint does. Our gummint is a bunch of pikers, compared to China. But then, China's had a head start on repression, so it'll take us a while to catch up. By then, maybe China will be even worse, and you'll still be able to view things relatively. Rose-colored glasses can be good for one's disposition, but they distort reality.

Misunderstood you there. It's the multi-volume version. It's going to take me a while, especially when stuff on the net makes for easier reading, and the type in the book is so dang small.

Garth would be torture in itself. How about some Judas Priest and AC/DC?
