    1.20 /mile expedite freight

In some respects you are right. Mainly the qual-com comes to mind. Insurance on the trucks is done outside of Panther. As far as deadheading or sitting, that is up to the individual. We DH very little so that isn't much of an issue. I would say that most Panther trucks are just below the 1.50...

They are paying 1.20 plus the FSC if it is a new person coming on. Others are running at a higher rate if they have been there.

    Starting a New Expediting Business

I wouldn't recommend it. I wouldn't even consider adding a truck and driver until YOU actually know and understand the business. At that point, you will know who the right company is. If you just have money to burn, I have a sailboat in Vegas I would like to sell you.

    1.20 /mile expedite freight

I think we have become quite spoiled. The 1.50 we would consider depending on where we are at, but the 1.20 for everything wouldn't even be looked at unless it is going on with another shipment. With that type of dispatch system I can see how one would get frustrated as your greatest...

Are you counting your FSC in that rate or is it above that?

Signing on with more than one carrier

They may have been running under their own authority. Panther and Landstar are probably the largest that let you book loads outside of their system.

    1.20 /mile expedite freight

Putting those budget Fed rates with those miles is a toxic combo. Glad the stock maneuver bailed you out. If those rates and mileage continue, you might be better served to be a partner carrier to the Fed. Their broker loads pay much better than your indicated rate.

    *** New Terminal ***

Good to hear on expanding down there in SC. You will do real well down there based on what freight volumes currently are down there.

    How foolish some members are....

Many of the issues listed in this thread are the exact reason reason I would never again lease to a carrier and be reliant upon them exclusively for all of my freight. We did that in a distant past with a nameless carrier and that was the last time. If one is sitting for a week waiting on a...

July shutdown & the Expediters cycle

Many of the carriers have a much more diverse base away from the auto biz. Big change came about three years ago. We have always stayed busy through that period.

    How foolish some members are....

Keep in mind that for many carriers, the more they put on the better. They are making money off QC's, truck and personal insurance, signs, and several other items depending on the carrier. When freight slows, they are looking to add to their bottom line anyway they can even if it is at the...

    1.20 /mile expedite freight

If the Fed is throwing straight truck loads to drivers at 88 cents per mile including the FSC, that is hardly a reason to pull out the pom-poms. I am mindful that several other carriers are still running at that rate. This strategy may eventually come back to bite some of them as new entries of...

    1.20 /mile expedite freight

Your point is well taken. You would be surprised how often people discount that very idea. You have a select few that will argue till the cows come home claiming a return on investment doesn't matter or doesn't exist.

That is what we found over time. They did justify the means at one time when rates were considerably higher and expenses were less. Too many get focused on the gross revenue and not the other long list of associated costs. I do agree with Phil in one respect in that it is hard to qualify a...

    1.20 /mile expedite freight

At the end of the day, it winds up being the same money or giving a slight edge to the dry box. Why? Because the investment coupled with the added expenses of a reefer can't keep up unless the initial investment (truck bought used) is factored in. No rocket science. If you spend twice as...

    ATeam's Florida Investment

I think that idea that property values decreased 50 to 60 percent only applies to the tornado magnets. Kinda like, "I always make $3.00 a mile", Values in some areas have certainly went down but not at that percentage for actual housing. Along the coast here, prices have come back quite a bit...
