Cargo Van check engine light/ Transit

This reminds me of the time I fixed the transmission problem on an International truck by replacing one of the injectors in the engine.

Big Truck I work on Hino trucks. I'll answer any questions I know the answers to.

Does it crank without starting, or does it do nothing? If it cranks but doesn't start, it probably has a fuel supply issue, or possibly electrical problem. If it doesn't crank, 9 out of ten times it's a battery/cable/connection issue. The starters are pretty reliable.

Big Truck I work on Hino trucks. I'll answer any questions I know the answers to.

I'd start with replacing the suction control valve (fuel pressure regulator), located on the front top of the injection pump. If the current one is an inch long, it's ancient. The replacement will be about 2.5 inches long. It will come with an adaptor plate. If it's already 2.5 inches long...

A P0088? how are you retrieving this code? The trans dipstick is on the right side, kind of near the air filter.

Today I climbed into the cab...

...of a wrecked dump truck and kicked out the windshield so the driver could escape. I feel really good today.

Do you know what the current ratio is? These engines do not mind being run at high rpm, but the mileage would be better if slowed down a little.

Overfilling the reservoir, huh? Might want to do a combustion gas test. I swear that soot thing is not that unusual, but yours does seem excessive. I'd try to figure out the source of the oil into the turbo (crankcase, air compressor, or the turbo itself) and address it. Have the exhaust...

Big Truck I work on Hino trucks. I'll answer any questions I know the answers to.

Is there excessive oil coming from turbo? Some is normal, dripping out is not. It may be from crankcase breather or air compressor. Have your injectors evaluated. This can cause excessive soot. Evaluate/modify ITV. Do you have to add coolant often? If there's a leak and coolant is low the...

Big Truck Air leaking from rear of selector

You Aussies and your weird Hinos. I've never seen one of those. I'd head over to your dealer and get an exploded view of that thing, and see if seals/ o-rings are available separately.

    Used tires can save money

Well, you need brakes to stop. It's bad when there's a stack of used brake pads lying around that aren't meant to be thrown away yet. Edit: There's one in my yard right now. Tire date codes go back to 2004. I am scared for my fellow motorists. The owner has already been given a lecture...

I diagnosed one wrong, and I don't even feel bad about it.

2004-ish Isuzu FRR. Early common rail. Truck would run fine, then drop three cylinders. Code 0158, short to B+ on something something injector something. Instant limp mode, cut three cylinders off. Those three were on a common B+ leg. There was power at both branches of that leg, the grounds for...

    Used tires can save money

The appliance delivery guys dig through our mountain of used tires and basically the only thing they leave behind are blowouts and racing slicks. I stopped by to look at one of the trucks the other day and was cut by the wire sticking out of the steer tire. Not the faintest bit of tread...
