London 2012: US Ralph Lauren uniform made in China

US athletes at the forthcoming London Olympics will wear stylish uniforms designed in the US - but made in China.

The news prompted a rare outbreak of bipartisan agreement, with Republican and Democratic leaders highly critical of the US Olympic Committee.

"I think the Olympic committee should be ashamed of themselves," Senate majority leader Harry Reid said.

The outfits - which cost close to $2,000 (£1,300) - were designed by US label Ralph Lauren.

The classic navy blue blazers, white trousers and skirts, and red-accented ties and berets may have a distinctly American look, but the label inside reads "Made in China", ABC News revealed.

'I am so upset'

That left a sour taste in the mouths of the nation's top lawmakers when they were asked about the affair on Thursday.

House of Representatives minority leader Nancy Pelosi stressed the entire nation was behind its Olympic athletes.

"We take such pride and they work so hard. They represent the very best and they're so excellent, it's all so beautiful," the California Democrat said.

"And they should be wearing uniforms made in America."

Republican House Speaker John Boehner kept his comments brief. "You'd think they'd know better," he said of the US Olympic Committee.

But the strongest remarks came from Harry Reid, the senior Democratic senator from Nevada - a state hard-hit by the lingering economic downturn and which has seen high levels of unemployment since the time of the last Olympics, held in China's capital, Beijing.

"I am so upset. I think the Olympic committee should be ashamed of themselves," he said.

"I think they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them. And start all over again," the Los Angeles Times quoted him as saying.

"I hope they wear nothing but a singlet that says 'USA' on it painted by hand. We have people in America working in the textile industry who are desperate for jobs," he concluded.

'Iconic American company'

In a statement, the US Olympic Committee said Team USA was privately funded and sponsored.

"We're proud of our partnership with Ralph Lauren, an iconic American company," the committee added.

The US Olympic uniforms cost $1,945 for men and $1,473 for women, Ralph Lauren said.

Although this is not the first time Ralph Lauren has designed US Olympic garb, lawmakers said the Chinese involvement had a symbolic impact, as the US anxiously searches for clues of renewed economic competitiveness.

"Today there are 600,000 vacant manufacturing jobs in this country and the Olympic committee is outsourcing the manufacturing of uniforms to China?" said Steve Israel, a House Democrat.

"That is not just outrageous, it's just plain dumb. It is self-defeating."

LOL, how about what the article isn't telling everyone!!!

From the article below:

The company who designed the uniforms, Ralph Lauren, has received less scrutiny. Few outlets have noted that Ralph Lauren himself is a prominent contributor to President Obama and the Democratic Party.

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Lauren has given $7,300 to Obama since 2008, and more than $35,000 to the Democratic National Committee.

Lawmakers were livid to discover that the United States’ Olympic team uniforms were made in China. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) even suggested “they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over again.”

Obama’s own ties to outsourcing have come under scrutiny of late. His much-vaunted green energy loan program awarded billions of taxpayer dollars to foreign-owned companies and firms that manufacture their products overseas.

It is unclear whether the DNC will be returning Lauren’s donation. DNC communications director Brad Woodhouse did not immediately return a request for comment.

Ralph Lauren has nearly all of his clothes made in China, so why should this be any different.

The uniforms for the London Olympics will be made in China...And Lauren also has designed the uniforms for the 2016 games, but because of this uproar, they will be made in the US....

It's a good thing they weren't made in England.

IF they returned to the roots of the games none of this would matter. Stick only to the military skills, and perform in the nude! That would get rid of all the wimp "sports" and then there would be no outsourcing of uniforms! :p

It's amazing how The Blaze can take a topic that is so thoroughly unimportant, and make people think that it's somehow important.

Evidently somebody somewhere thinks it's important, because the US Olympic committee has announced the uniforms for the winter olympics in 2014 will be made in the good old USofA. I imagine the execs at Ralph Lauren went into crisis mode and were glad to make the change as well. Instead of all the positive advertising exposure they expected from these uniforms (who can miss the obvious polo pony logo on the left breast pocket), they're going to get the exact opposite.

Maybe they can cut a deal with their buddies at the garmet workers and textile unions to get the 2014 uniforms made at a competitive cost. Even after being made in China this year's $2000 price tag per set seems a bit steep. Ralph Lauren should have been satisfied with the advertising benefits they would have received from having their enlarged logo on the olympic duds, instead of now being perceived as trying to get the right profit margin. No telling how much this P.R. hit will cost them.
