It always amazed me that no one makes less than a babysitter - and no one does a job that matters more to a parent who is literally putting their child's life in the sitter's care.
We have some seriously screwy priorities. If it's traditionally 'women's work', the pay is peanuts, guaranteed.
And why is no one talking about the government making some budget cuts that allow them to share the sacrifice they demand of everyone else?

You can't seriously believe anyone volunteers for military service because of money, right? My son interrupted his university studies to serve in the Marine Corps out of a sense of civic duty. It took his mother and I completely by surprise. We are very proud of our son's service. In less than 18 months he will return to finish his degree in biology. The Marine Corps doesn't accept slackers, whiners or stupid people.

Actually if you do the math teachers make less than baby sitters. Take a class of say 25 kids times $3/hour times 6 hours per day times 180 days and you get $81k. Its another traditionally female job and another one that not many get involved in for money.

A big thank you to your son:D

My son and his Marine buddies would tell you a "thank you" is unnecessary. They volunteered. In this age of cynicism, it surprises many folks that so many young men and women still believe in something bigger than themselves. The Western world's fight against radical Islam is the great calling of our time. Just as Pat Tillman put aside a comfortable life in America to take up arms for his country, millions of faceless and nameless Americans have felt moved to serve since 9/11. The many Marines I have met would rather give thanks than receive it. Humility is an almost universal trait among these young patriots. We are a fortunate nation to have them.

Have you been in the Corps? Me thinks you haven't. I've known plenty of all three, myself... some more than one on the list, and one or two who were all three.
The true slackers, whiners and stupid people are hustled out of service in pretty quick order. Unlike your comfortable civilian life, in military situations these slackers are deemed a danger to their comrades. Some end up in the brig, some in the rear echelon and some sent home. Their presence is an affront to the stalwarts.

Actually, the corps takes and keeps many, many stupid people. Not that your son is, but I guarantee you he knows plenty of stupid marines.

When I met my Air Force recruiter, he was on the phone with the marine or army recruiter. They called him because someone who scored 26 on the ASVAB wasn't going to be accepted in the AF, so he went to the army or marine recruiter and they were calling to have his paperwork sent over so they could take him. 26 isn't much smarter than a houseplant.

For the lousy job they do, teachers shouldn't make any more than a babysitter. It's hard to keep a naturally inquisitive child dumb, but somehow they pull it off.

They can't read, but they know about fisting and how to put a condom on a banana.

Well if they should be paid the same as a baby sitter then they have huge pay raises coming. The issue in the education system actually has more to do with poor parenting, teachers are forced into spending more and more time raising kids rather than teaching. Yes there are terrible teachers that are in the system but the ability to get rid of them is hampered by unions and incredibly poor pay.

Maybe in the infantry. But in the airwing, there are plenty of all of them.

It has more to do with politics than poor parenting. Special interest groups pressure politicians at all levels to not teach phonics, indoctrinate students into the thinking of their perverted advocacy groups, etc.

There is a lot of poor parenting out there, but largely because those parents were mis-educated in those same government schools.

Poor parenting has nothing to do with poor education at the schools, it is not a function of the school to teach people how to parent. It was the breakdown of the family dynamic that then forced teachers to have to spend time teaching kids about brushing their teeth, showering, and deodorant. Teachers are not the problem in most cases, it is the family first, then unions and political issues.

I was attempting to make a generalized statement about my observations and understanding of USMC standards as they currently exist. In any large organization, some slackers, whiners and stupid people will slip through the cracks. They are dealt with as needed. It is distressing to see the eagerness, indeed enthusiasm, which lunges forward to disparage our troops.

You may be overly sensitive to it. In any case, it's almost as distressing as watching the disingenuous unbridled enthusiasm displayed by many with the over-the-top fawning over our troops. It began with the returning soldiers from the Gulf War, the first major engagement since Vietnam, where massive national guilt had taken a grip so as to have people in this country make absolutely sure that returning soldiers did not experience anything even remotely close to what Vietnam veterans experienced. The pendulum swung back too far, can I get a yellow ribbon 'round the old oak tree.

And the fawning continues, because it's in vogue, it's all the rage, it's politically correct.

Credit is due where credit is deserved, and all soldiers deserve some credit. But they aren't as a group due the kind and level of credit that many people give them. To listen to some, simply by virtue of volunteering to wear a uniform, all soldiers are a pair of sandals away from walking on water.

That's not to say you shouldn't be proud of your son. You should be. We all are proud of everyone who volunteers to serve our country in the military. But we don't need any idealistic embellishments to build these people up to be more than they are. Like, we don't need to be told the Marine Corps doesn't accept slackers, whiners or stupid people, when we all know darn good and well they do. The military including the Marines are loaded with the same thing that's out in civilian land. Some are accepted, some slip through the cracks, some are dealt with, and some are put in the field of battle with a gun in their hand. And these same slackers, whiners and stupid people, regardless of their branch of the military, will be issued their own virtual sandals by the American people when they come home.

We absolutely agree on one thing however, that few if any people volunteer for military service because of the money. Everyone I know in the military, current and former, all say essentially the same things: they would do it for free as long as their families back home were taken care of. My cousin, who is a Colonel making like 10 grand a month, says the same thing. Not sure what his stance would be on Congress cutting out military pensions, tho. :D
