Did Anyone Notice...

June 6, D-Day, the Normandy Invasion, the beginning of the end for Hitler.

When I was having my coffee, this morning, and catching up on the news, on the internet machine, I couldn't find any mention of the above, on any of the ones I checked.

So, I called two of the local TV stations to ask what they planned; both said they would have stories on their news broadcast today. And they did; I watched. I'll call the local paper tomorrow to inquire as to why they failed to remember.

As the old quote says: "Those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it."

These brave men of "our greatest generation" are fast disappearing. If you are fortunate enough to meet one, tell him thank you.

June 6th was just one of many "D Days" in that war. There were landings in Sicily, N. Africa and all over the Pacific. My Dad was in the "CBI" China, Burma and India, with the Mars Task Force. They took the place of Merril's Mauraders when they ceased to exist as a force. He was in French Indo China, near Saigon, when he got the message that the war had ended. You should hear some of his stories.

It definitely didn't get as much attention as it deserved.

The opening scenes of the film "Saving Private Ryan" probably give a realistic depiction of the horrors of D-Day, June 6, 1944. That sort of slaughter of US military forces won't happen again. With modern satellite capabilities and air superiority, US military commanders would "clear" the beaches in a matter of minutes.

My dad was a 21-year old schoolteacher when drafted in WWII in January 1942. That generation is nearly gone. My dad passed away 2 years ago. I remain in awe of those who served. Unlike our contemporary adventures, WWII was total war.

I think Tom Hanks and Steven Speilberg did a really amazing job showing this generation in film what happened with Band of Brothers and now The Pacific. I realize film is in now way the real thing, but I think they did an amazing job trying to capture some of what happened.

Please remember,
D-Day was an "Allied Invasion" on Hitler's Europe,
Canada had 1 beach and
Britian had 2, just like the USA did...

It was "team" effort...that was thankfully successful!!!!!!

Actually I heard the Canadians were the first to get beyond the beaches.

BUT you left out the free French, the free Polish army, Norway, and Australia.

The sad thing is, we are too removed from our own history. France and Europe do actually remember what we did but to most of our country, it is just another day.

Saving Private Ryan is a great film but our society has become accustom to the violence and the special effects so trying to tell the seriousness of the war through the movie is near impossible. When someone sat at through the news reels in the 40's, they took it differently and seriously, where we can't.

Even though many will consider this the triumph of coordinated effort, it is one step removed from the real triumph - the winning of the battle of the Atlantic.

Hmmm..as in the title of this thread...Did anyone notice that the one that is currently staying in the White House had no comment or acknowledgement about our military or what tey went through on the historic "D" day... BUT!! He did have a little "get together party" in the east room before they left for a perfomance at the Ford Theater...oh.. and earlier in the day he had time to meet with another real piece of work ... desmond tutu

Barack Obama Ignores D-Day Anniversary ? Goes to Theatre Party - Big Government

This piece of work continues to show he has no regard for our military or the people that serve our country....

Actually, the reason Obama gave for turning down the French invitation to Normandy was that he didn't want to offend the Germans.

What a leader we have!
