What is the deal with micromanaging owners? I signed a contract to run a business,as a subcontractor NOT a company driver. It should be up to me to move where I want, take what Loads I want,QC when I want,go home when and how I want, and sit where I want!!! Here is what really P*sses me off..I checked the portal before i went to bed and you were in this city, and I got up this morning and I see you were at the consignee.I see that you stopped for 4 hours during the night. You can stop whenever you get tired. Thank you for caring!! Good freakin god,why do I need a freakin babysitter at the age of 48.WTF? Then owners wonder why they can't keep drivers!! Quit micromanaging and get a life......I'm looking for somethiing else,if I am going to be treated as a company driver I might as work local and be home everynight.

That's really more of a PM or e-mail that you should send to your owner.

Post his e-mail address and I'll be happy to play the go-between on this. :D

Not all owners micro-manage, might be time to be looking for a new situation. There are as many good owners out there as there are good drivers. The reverse is just as true. If this owner does not fit your needs, move on. There are many good owners out there that would love a person that can make them money. After all, that is why they are in business, so they can make money.

If your paying the fuel and tolls I will agree with you on that.
If your not. Well ya can't freelance the Truck. As the owner is paying for the fuel tolls and maintance.

My first years out here I freelanced and made good money. However the owner paid for the fuel and the tolls. I made me money him money and my Co driver money.
Rocked the house so to speak.

Your right we are not employees we are contractors.

Dont let the Choice make you, You make the Choice.

If some one makes a mistake they shouldnt have to pay for it for the rest of their lives.

Since we are Contractors and may or may not have signed contracts, a thing to remember is this the Company.
Ie XXX Expedite or what ever can not tell you that you have to honor didly with whom you have Contract dealing with. If they do they crossed the line as that is making you an Employee. somthing to think about. One last thing if your on a military Retainer not a retirement no matter what contract you signed with whom.. Uncle Sam still owns You and when he needs you He will call. That piece of paper you signed with that person is might as well throw it in the trash can, weather Uncle Sam calls you or not till your time is up. No one Can hold you to anythng else.
Dont let them BS you or tell you different.
They dont want Uncle Sam on their Case.
Audits, Loose Equipment, ect all get tied up in the political Madness. Lidagations.
People realy dont think. There is difference between being a contractor and a Employee. Just like there is a difference between a Retainee and a Retiree.

Good Luck
Have a Safe One.

Truck payments, repairs, insurances, tires, maintenance. These expenses are 10's of thousands of dollars a year. I can understand why a fleet owner would want to be involved with what is going on with the truck. Sounds like things were not explained and defined enough from the fleet owner before you went out on the road in regards to how the driver and fleet owner would work together. A fleet owner would be stupid not to keep tabs on his truck and driver, but once trust and understanding is earned then give the operator more room to run the truck. Versus coming on here and saying WTF?? maybe place a call to the owner and try to come to an understanding. Just my .02, I've been on both sides of the issue

Why do you drive for a owner in the first place? Would it be any or all of the following reasons?

1) No cash outlay for the vehicle: (anywhere from 15,000.00 to 200,000.00 dollars)
2) No maintainence on the vehicle ($1000.00 + per month)
3) depending on the agreement, no tolls or fuel cost?

Do you or would you expect someone to invest these kind of dollars in a business and then simply hand the keys over to somebody and say "here ya go"? The owner has ALL the risk. What do you have? What you have done in the past, in reality, is neither here nor there. The man with the money holds the keys to the Kingdom. His/her truck, his/her rules. If you don't like it, simply buy your own truck.

The owner has all the financial risk is correct

Look at it this way, speaking of micro managed...the carrier has the eye in the sky on you at all times. Some carriers call you all the time, if your fueling too long, if you stopped etc. The carrier has a risk of losing the customer so that's why the have qualcomms. The owner is at risk of losing the truck of it's not productive. You also mentioned:

" It should be up to me to move where I want, take what Loads I want,QC when I want,go home when and how I want, and sit where I want!!"

ORLY, so if you want to work one week a month that should be ok? Turn down good paying loads because you want to head home, or go in a certain part of the country? If you want to conduct business like that like this poster said go buy your own truck. I bet you will have a different outlook when you got to pay that truck note and pay for the repairs etc.

So let me ask this rather off the wall question -

How much does one make driving a van for the owner who takes 60% of the revenue to the truck and pays nothing (maintenance, tolls or fuel)?

Fleet Owner
At the end of the day, the most successful fleet owner/driver relationship is one that is built on a true partnership. When both really understand & comprehend the needs of each other, then success usually follows.

Base rate of .70 times 40% would be .28 a mile not counting any extras..and minus fixed costs....Comp and bobtail Ins..

In translation this means go work at Walmart....you can sleep in your own bed and you don't have to figure out where you're going to urinate in the middle of the night....
