An Enhanced Driver's License in NY state costs
an additional $30 - much less than a passport.
I have heard that there is a privacy issue with these chip containing License/Passport. Because the info can be read electronically from a distance you should keep them in a safe holder of some kind. The state dept sends passports out with a foil lined envelope. It should be kept in this protective enclosure. I hear you can buy a wallet that will protect the radio pickup of the information.
NY issues a foil-lined envelope with each EDL. It's kind of a pain to pull the envelope out of your wallet, then pull the DL out of the envelope every time you're asked to show your DL, but overall it's much more convenient, IMHO, than keeping a separate document for travel. Will have to look for the EDL-smart wallet - that's pretty cool and much more convenient.
I think its bs that even if they don't find anything offending or suspicious they can still confiscate yer electronics (pda, smart phone,laptop,mp3 and keep it for up to 6months???
Nothing new here. For all of my 50 years, Border Patrol has had the ability to tear your car down to parade rest for no reason whatsoever, and it's your dime to have it put back together. I grew up in Northern Maine, and there are often more Border Patrol in the area than moose (ask me about the time I crossed with a diabetic boyfriend and they found his syringes).
Your attitude determines how your border crossing goes, either way.
For the most part, that's absolutely true. If you expect them to be jerks, guess what - they're gonna be jerks. If you expect them to do due diligence and go through the checklist, you'll be fine.
