When are you going to retire?
When talking with our investment advisor, he asked, “So when are you hoping to retire?” Both of us were quiet as we did not know how to answer the question. While we have saved for retirement, neither one of us has thought seriously about retirement. What in the world would we do?
It occurred to us we are in the minority of people who love what we do and cannot imagine not being about to head out in the truck to pick up that next load. We have done both truckload, dock to dock, and nothing compares with expediting if you want to drive a truck. Our truck is the same truck used in a “big truck” operation, and we are lucky enough not to have to pull a trailer to make a living.
Through expediting, we have had the best experiences, met some of the most amazing people, and have taken time off in all areas of the country to see the sights. The ARI Sleeper has the hookups to go into campgrounds, and we have been to many campgrounds. Our truck is about the size of the smallest tiny home, yet we can make an income with it. Talk about having your cake and eating it too.
This job is not for everyone, and that is a good thing. For those that like driving, seeing other areas of the country, and can enjoy sitting and waiting for a load or running hard, this is a great way to make a living. If you need to be home, often this is not the job for you as we never know where we will be next. For us, it is a case of what does it matter? If the load pays well, take it, and enjoy the ride and when it is time to go home, go home.
We will continue to fund our retirement and enjoy all of the opportunities that expediting has to offer, and maybe at some time, not being truck drivers might be appealing, but we have no plans to quit.
