Running a successful business means keeping records, keeping receipts, and keeping track of our income and expenses.   I use Quicken to keep track of our expenses and each year I fine-tune the program to better fit our business.

Throughout the year I use Neat Receipts to scan all of my paperwork, which includes invoices, BOL's, and letters that I might need later.   Throughout the year I keep a folder with all of my receipts and BOL's and when I get home I file the receipts and shred the BOL's.

Each month throughout the year I run a P & L using Quicken for a couple of reasons.   One is a little goofy and one that will trip me up at the end of the year, I somehow put a payment in the wrong category.   When I run my monthly P & L it is easy to catch this mistake and correct it before the end of the year.

There is a small notebook in our pickup where we notate when we use the pickup for business.   We only have the one vehicle so this is necessary for taxes.   At the end of the year I go through the notebook and add up the business miles.

Personally I have fun with all of this and due to keeping good records throughout the year I enjoy wrapping everything up, filing all of my receipts and starting a new year with a clean slate.
