Your Message to Expo Attendees

We are expecting 5,000 people at this years Expedite Expo, including many EO Open Forum members. I will be doing a workshop there entitled "Business Concepts for Expediters."

For part of the time, I plan to go off topic and share with attendees what expediters are saying about the business. So, I am asking expediters here, in 25 words or less, what do you have to say about the business?

People in the room will include good folks who are looking at expediting for the first time and have traveled far to learn more about it at the Expo. With them in mind, what do you have to say about the business?

Go into it with an open mind and common sense. Never think you've learned everything. It's a constantly changing business. Always be willing to adapt.

Remain flexable and agile toward any and all opportunities. And, be vigilant for opportunity that betters your position.... not an opportunity that betters your home, rest, family, sightseeing position.

Look around the room. Maybe three people have done remotely near enough homework and learning to enter this business. When you've studied and researched for hundreds of hours just as you would to be an accountant or HVAC specialist then make your decision.

If you think this is about driving a truck raise your right hand. If you think this is about running a business raise your left hand.

All those with their right hands up or without their hands in the air, please enjoy the show and come back next year when you are ready to be serious.

Sorry Phil, couldn't say that in less than 25. I always was wordy.

25 words or less?

Well ok i'll try....

Listen and read the negative as much as the positives of this business

Learn from other's mistakes

Never ever think this is a paid vacation

There that's 25......

make sure you are set up financially with enough cash in the bank to cover your bills for 3-6 months

A big thank you to those of you who offered in this thread a message to the 2009 Expo attendees. I printed your responses and read them word for word in the workshop I gave. The attendees listened closely and seemed to enjoy hearing from "real" expediters out there in addition to those who presented shiny trucks and rehearsed presentations at the show. Your words provided a meaningful contribution to the workshop and the people who came to the expo to learn more about expedting.
