This SHOULD remind people of certain 20th Century countries that we ended up fighting wars with. Are ovens next? This "modern country" will soon have "the bomb". Hope our "Coward in Chief" has a plan, he is going to need one!!! Thanks Jimmy!!

Rights group decries 'execution binge' in Iran

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Iranian authorities have unleashed an "execution binge" with an average rate of one person hanged every eight hours since the beginning of the year, a rights group monitoring the Islamic Republic said Sunday.

"The Iranian Judiciary is on an execution binge orchestrated by the intelligence and security agencies," stated Aaron Rhodes, a spokesman for the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran.

A statement by the New York-based group said at least 47 prisoners have been hanged since Jan. 1, including a reported Kurdish activist accused of fighting against the state. It said other jailed Kurds also are at risk of facing the gallows for alleged links to a groups battling for greater rights for Iran's Kurdish minority.

Most of the others executed were convicted of violent crimes such as murder.

The group said the actual number of people put to death this year could be higher because Iranian authorities may not make public all executions.

Rights groups and media reports say at least 179 people were executed in Iran last year.

Thousands of inmates are on death row, but Iran's judiciary has come under intense international pressure over the case of a woman sentenced to death by stoning for adultery. Judiciary officials have said they are reviewing the sentence against Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, but there have been no clear signals on whether it could be commuted.

Ashtiani was convicted of adultery in 2006 after the murder of her husband and sentenced to death by stoning. In the face of international outrage, the sentence has been suspended and is under study by Iran's Supreme Court.

She was later convicted of being an accessory to her husband's murder and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Moon beams all around please.

The problem you think we need to actually do something about all if this ... get with it please.

Understand that first we have an inept leader which is an understatement but also understand that IF anything is going to change Iran, it will not be an external force changing it - IT HAS TO COME from within.

I don't know about you guys but talking to Iranians on a regular basis (those who live here) they are clear that their country will change but if the US or Israel attacks them, the people there will fight not because they support the oppressive government but because they support their country. They also say that being one of the oldest cultures on the earth (they're Persia you know?), they have seen governments come and go and the people still remain which will be the case sooner than you think.

The Iranians look at Iraq, they think "I would like to have that happen here" and then see what their government does to them when there is a protest (there is more to invading Iraq than what many could possibly comprehend).

Give it time, the US and the world can't do much about the internal stuff other than support those who are trying to change things and I got to tell you that I don't see much of that happening from these so called civil rights/women's rights groups here in the states.

Sorry but I just don't agree. We could be doing far more. It just takes "stones" and a will to do what is right. No more "hand wringing". We have had chance after chance over the years to end this threat. We are about to reap the "benefits" on stupidity and inaction.

No use me trying to change your mind, I can't. No use you trying to change mine, you can't. We will just have to agree to disagree.

But do more of what?

Reap what benefits?

We are not being passive but there is a limitation of what we can do by the actions of the past 6 presidents, not one of them alone has done enough to be the sole cause of our lack of credibility. The last real chance we had was with Reagan and he ran.

Take a serious look at the situation and the people who Iran is on good terms with and than take a close look at what our country is today. Even under Bush I we couldn't do a thing that impacts Iran (and that was with Saddam in power), and to expect us to do something now is a bit over the top.

The problem is that many don't get the idea that Iran is an international issue, it is a possible source of instability within a region that is strife with all kinds of issues. Iran I feel is afraid of Israel and we are the keeper of the stability between the two. If we force something to happen, it may be that we will lose that important position and never regain it because of our overall weakness.

If you want to do something, support those who are willing to make changes within the country, not being confrontational about the issue that make them laugh.

We don't have the leadership, we don't have the internal fortitude (Tuscon proved that) and we don't have the standing with the international community because of our domestic economic actions, so do you want us to appear to be from the comedy channel?
