The parents should be the ones in control of the schools. BUT with that said I think there is no reason for public education system and no reason we are using a system that is so outdated that it makes it difficult for parents to hold their schools accountable.
For some odd reason the students today here are less intelligent than those coming out of South Africa or India. The experts have been trying to figure out why this is so but can't see it. The experts put all kinds of reasons into the spotlight at different times which all seem to equate to a lack of money. The government responses to this by throwing more money at the problem without the accountability.
The real caused for our dismal uneducated dumb population is simple - we have the student tied to the school district and the money opposed to the money tied to the student with the absolute freedom for the student (parent) to choose a education outlet that fits their needs. Changing this is simple and the outcome will be measured within a few years, not decades.
This single change will also work better if we get rid of the idea that everyone needs to go to college. I feel this has been one of the biggest money making marketing schemes since the ponzi scheme called social security. The amount of money that goes into supporting the institutes of higher learning is more than many third world nation's GDP and we get less and less every year from this dumping of money. The one thing that many in the education industry have pointed out is high tuition cost is directly tied to the amount of Federal and State aide that the student has access to. Remove the aid, and the tuition will come down. When a university raises tuition costs by 15% while getting an increase in federal funding of 17% plus more aid going to their students, it is obvious that they are not an education system but a corporation.
The other cause that is an underlying cause is having any government intervention into the education system in the first place. Eliminating the education department at both the state and federal level is one of the best things that could happen. 110 years ago we had a really great education system, no state or federal involvement at all but since the 1940's with states being involved and the 1950's when the feds got involved, the quality of education has been dismal.
