What has our Goverment

But Layout, the jobs that are spurred from NASA would also be spurred from a private company doing the same work. NASA should focus efforts on space, and related issues, not global warming or tenure for a bunch of researchers working on projects that are politically related.

The same also goes for the use of US companies to build components for any NASA project, there is no longer the US only policy.

Oh, I agree Greg, but, government has decided that they should have the monopoly on this. I don't like it, I think it is short sited and wrong. I think it has held us back. BUT, unless we can change it I would like to see the spending continue. Those jobs are better than welfare. Layoutshooter

I seriously doubt that a private company could have put a man on the moon within 10 years, and that's what NASA was born from. And from NASA, entire industries have evolved, and research that was done specifically for NASA has been used for other purposes. Sure, maybe most or all of those advances would have been made solely by private enterprise, but not nearly as fast, and probably not nearly as diverse. The US is the undisputed high tech leader in the world, and it's largely because of NASA.

The $5 figure is a general figure. If you look at the return directly out of NASA, the dollar figure is in the hole, huge, probably get back a dollar for every $10 spent. But if you look at all the collateral evolution (like the microchips and all of the things in use today that utilize the technology, and medical imaging and computer graphics), as one study showed, it's more like $25 back for every $1 spent.

NASA isn't perfect, never had been, but I would argue that even with the cost overruns and failures, NASA is more responsible with it's budget than any other government agency. But even looking at it as a pure loss leader, the information we learn from the space program is astonishing. The major advances in astronomy over the last 30 years have all come directly out of NASA. They're cataloging actual planets in other solar systems now, something that was impossible 30 years ago.

Lets not forget about NASA. Most say it is a waiste of money but think of all the advancements that have come about because of it. Microwaves, Velcro, GPS, etc.

We also have roads, fire, police, military, schools, all things that are provided with our tax dollors.

But that is where I draw the line. Any other governmental control is bad. Whether its gun control or to telling me how my house should look or be. They have over stepped their boundries in so many areas.

Nasa advancements-and you fail to mention Tang! That is unforgivable. **** Moot mentioned it already and I missed it.

Turtle,
Be serious, it took more than a government agency to put a man on the moon and since that time we have been using obsolete equipment (shuttle) that should have had a replacement by now. It took us from 1961 to 1969 to accomplish the first moon landing and we have yet to achieve something that great since. OK I give you space lab and the first shuttle flights oh and Hubble but what else?

I am not talking about technology transfer, but milestones of space exploration which I thought was their mission was space. They have not reached their cost reduction goals set in the 90's nor have they used their budget effectively. A lot of the projects, smaller ones (robotics) are actually being done ar universities, which begs the question what are they doing with with these projects.

We should with this brain trust put together a replacement reusable space vehicle that is capable of launching in different conditions and have it ready before the Iranians launch their space mission to Mars (that was sarcasm) but we are returning to a system something like the Saturn system with the use of expendable rockets, manual recovery system and limited crew space - Orion. I feel that Lockheed sold us a bill of goods and the oversight on congress failed to look at alternatives.

NASA was born out of the so-called Cold War to help develope missle systems. It was a very thinly veiled cover. The race to the moon was a secondary program. We needed to insure that we controlled the high ground, space in this instance, not the Soviets. Layoutshooter

Utilities, essential and emergency services like police, fire, medical, roads, minimum wage standards, workplace safety, vehicle safety, food safety, environmental cleanup. There's actually quite a long list of things the government has done at the local, state and federal level over the past 4 decades that have benefited the working class.

Layout, I would have to agree with Turtle here. The gov. has done all of this,BUT it allways turns out to be a big waste of money. All of these goverment employees get like 52 payed holidays 2,3,4 week payed vacations, medical, dental, retirement, gov.vehicles, all of this has an affect on our pocket, can't you feel there hand in there diggin deeper.

I don't know about all state employees but most federal employees pay a large percentage of thier health insurance costs. When I was with the DOD I paid 60%. When I worked for a city school system I only paid 20% and when I worked for the Pennsylvania DCNR I had no health care. Those PA state employees who did have coverage paid a percentage but I don't know how big a percentage. I got nothing for my fire fighting. Layoutshooter
