Van brakes

My van has 93k on it. Recently on long downhills where I apply and slow then release for a bit then repeat it has started to vibrate. It doesn't do it on fairly level surfaces or stopping for a single stop. I presume I've got a disc that needs resurfacing and perhaps it's time for new pads as well. What is reasonable mileage for a set of brakes? Who would you go to for brakes?

Reassonable mileage out of brakes will largely be determined by the driver, each will be different. As for the vibration, it is a rotor and it will get worse and is fairly common on Chevys and gmcs...the rotors are thick and you can have them machined, but i can tell you from experience with this, the vibration will come back alot quicker...as funny as it sounds, you can't machine that "warp" out of the rotor. you can only "resurface" it...

As for who, if you have a mechanic that you feel is good, use him, i do my own brakes, had the rotors machined at my ,local "autozone".. and I have also replace the ft hub/bearing assemblise (twice in 400,000 miles) myself. If you are going to have the brakes done, they will machine the rotors at that time...

Front pads and rotors replaced at 377,000 mile. Still running original rear brake pads.

I just replaced my front brakes because "even though they wee still good" they rotors were warped from going down the hill with a heavy load! I'd just replace everything and have new stuff up front that way you don't have to redo the job. If you replace the pads and still have warped rotors on the front, not only will the steering wheel continue to shake, but you will also run the risk of warping the new pads.

I just got new pads and rotors front and back, new monroe gas reflex shocks, and new wheel bearings front and back and I can definitely notice the stopping power and the difference in the way the van rides. Everything is tight now. The old front hub assemblies that came off the van were pretty beat up and make clacking noise when I spin them. Well, do what you want, but i'd replace it all while you have the tires off! Good luck, and thanks for the advice on the other thread Chef!
