The US will seek to expand domestic oil production in an attempt to reduce dependence on imported oil and bring down fuel prices, President Obama says.

New leases for exploration will be granted in non-protected areas of Alaska and in the Gulf of Mexico.

In his weekly address the president insisted the US could reduce its need for imported oil and improve safety.

And he urged Congress to back proposals to end taxpayer subsidies to highly profitable oil companies.

Using his address to tell Americans that he understood their concerns about rising prices, President Obama focused particularly on the price of fuel, which has spiked in recent months

The key thing was in "unprotected" areas. What a joke. It is just part of King Putz 1st campaign. They will just protect everything and SAY that they are allowing drilling.

We should end all taxypayer subsidies not just the ones for oil companies, the US Federal Govt should not be choosing 1 industry over another to support and that includes the stupid idea of paying farmers not to farm

I don't like the word "subsidies" when talking about taxes. There are NO subsidies. All we are doing is allowing them to keep more of what they earn. A "subsidy" would be giving money to an industry or individual who did NOT EARN it. Like welfare. We subsidize those who do not earn it. The government has NO right to others money. They do not lose money when they tax less since it is not their's to start with. ALL tax rates are TOO high.

I won't go into the farm thing. It is VERY complicated and NOT as simple as many want to make it out to be. There is a lot of sound science involved. It is the tax codes that are causing a lot of the problems with farming.

There should be ONE corporate tax, paid on PROFITS only. The same RATE for all businesses. It should be FAR lower than what we have. Our government AND it's taxes are killing business activity in this country.

Same for income taxes, if we have to have one. ONE rate, EVERYONE pays it.

The government should learn to live within their means.

It is the leftists and their socialist ideas that are causing the bulk of our fiscal problems. When I say leftists I include BOTH of the criminal enterprises that we call "political parties". Neither one of them are worth what a 3 pound bag of dried turkey dung
would cost. At least the turkey dung has a use.

Leftist or right wingers, it is the same thing. Conservative and liberal are the same thing. The problem with any subsidized is too easy - we can't afford them.

GM will be selling more stock in the near future, this is money that should be going right back to us, the US tax payer but they are talking again about forgiving the debt and letting GM use the money to expand in foreign markets. We as tax payers can not continue any of these as much as we can't continue with social security without changing it.

If we want to get serious about oil and gas, I bet the Big Old Mean Polluting Oil Companies would rather have a zero fee, zero cost lease with a fair royalty scheme on the back end than to have to be subsidized to off set their losses from the leases they have to take. Remember that a few of these companies have to deal with bundled leases which means they have to drill so many holes in a short time or lose the lease.

Well, I know of NO "right wingers" in our government. All I see is a few less leftists. I don't even see any "center types".

Really?

I thought those conservatives in congress were sort of like conservatives and not liberals ... so ... you saying they are all leftist ... maybe except those who are declared libertarians?

Our government has been moving to the left for decades. What I would call a "conservative" are far and few between. I doubt that many in here to call themselves "conservative" would agree with what I think that means.

Yes, I am saying that from my point of view the vast majority of our elected officials are leftists. I would go as far as to say the same for the "declared libertarians". Once you "pin them down" so to speak or the "deals" start getting made they just fall right into lock step with the slugs. Generally speaking of course.

Nope..I don't like Obama...2 1/2 yrs and nothing has been done....any improvements are because corporate America has adjusted themselves...the way it is supposed to be...
The dollar is in the tank as well as unemployment, the financial/banking is shot and foreign policy is non existent..immigration is his play toy...and health care act..he can stick that where the sun don't shine...

That's because he inherited all of this mess from FDR.

The dollar is in the tank as well as unemployment,

Wow unemployment down like the dollar, great ... now I can get a real job.

the financial/banking is shot and foreign policy is non existent..

Actually he has great foreign policies, he continued Bushes and got ourselves in the middle of a civil war.

As for banking and finance, the opposite is actually true. Our financial world is very strong, with the stock market up (as many are cheering about for some stupid reason) and our banks having the cash to shore up their books, we haven't been in this good of a position in 30 years.

immigration is his play toy...and health care act..he can stick that where the sun don't shine...

Immigration isn't a toy, it is a point on the campaign list to get done. I don't get the Hispanic voter in this country, they want to vote for people who allow their fellow country people to be abused and/or enslaved while forgetting that it isn't just about them.

Health care? Well that horse left the barn and the new republic congress has done nothing to stop and even passed a budget as a compromise instead of taking a stand and fighting it so they may be also out in 2012.
