UPS is now on the site

Hiya,

Is it true the UPS will allow someone to deliver in a car? I looked over the site & didn't see anything about that. Also, for the airport freight are they based out of only the major airports or do they have freight out of the smaller regional airports also?

Thanx for your time,
Danny

ps: I've tried contacting them via both here & calling them. No answers as of yet, hence me writing this.

DannyD,

You might just try finding out where the local facility is and contact them there. If I'm not mistaken, UPS Expedite falls under UPS Supply Chain Services. It will most likely be a different facility than your normal package one.

Yes, we are "under" UPS Supply chain services, but we are not the same company...we actually have moved freight for them also! We are in Overland Park, KS, with three other satellite offices in Dayton, charlotte, and El Paso. We don't have any control over their trucks, freight, or billing, nor do they over ours. take a look @ ups-scs.com, we fall under the "transportation" tab. Peace....;)

Hiya Jeff,

Thanx for the tip. I wasn't able to find anything out of Flint. I found a few places out of Detroit Metro, which is where I currently work out of. If I'm gonna work out of Metro I'll probably stay where I'm at unless UPS allows us to work out of a car. By Feb. I'll need a new van & am hesitant to buy one. EGL is a good company & I'd recommend em to anyone who's looking for local work.

My challenge is I live 80 miles away, which for local work is kind of far. There aren't really a lot of oppurtunities to take that quick $40 run or what have ya. It's like a few have to be bundled together to make it worthwhile to take anything. So I was looking for something out of Flint Bishop Airport, which is about 3 miles from my house.

I appreciate your help here. If they end up contacting me I'll post the details. If they don't that's ok as I'm pretty content where I'm at. I'm not really under any stress or anything. I have work until Feb of next year at the very least & longer if I get a newer van. Just maybe lookin to improve my situation a little bit if possible.

Take care,
Danny

Question for jbrbears. I spoke to the UPS Supply Chain folks a few years ago in the Orlando area, where I was living at the time. All their runs were strictly local, and yes, you could use a passenger car for some of the loads.
Now, on the UPS site, SCS is listed and referred to on the same page as Expedite. Also, the recruiting ads for Expedite are talking about the availibity of local-only work. So, I guess my question(s) is this. Are you guys dispatching for the SCS stuff too,is that still separate, how realistic do you think it would to try to work "local-only" with your division?
Maybe our good friends here at EO can do one of those Carrier Profiles on UPS Expedite in the near future, since it seems to have generated so much buzz.

the local only work is specifically for airport drops and recovery/delivery (from MCO, for example). Owner operators who prefer to "stay local" do these types of runs, as well as their preference of miles from home they will go. For example, you would have the option to state to dispatch that you won't go further than 100 miles from home. In those cases, we wouldn't call you for a delivery picking up from MCO that was 150 miles from Orlando airport. Locals also have the option to even give hours they will/won't work. Of course, this will limit the amount of runs you would have a chance to get, and we would then resort to calling a local cartage company instead. As far as cars, they CAN be used, but it's not encouraged. I seriously doubt that carrier relations will be hiring someone who specifically wants to use a car as their transport vehicle. the SCS stuff is still separate, and the ability to make decent money as a local is totally dependant on the market in which you live, ie how much expedited freight is moved into/out of your area. MCO used to be reasonably busy for us about 3 years ago, but it's dropped off a lot. hope this helps!;)

I picked up a UPS Supply Chain load out of Flint a few months ago, Danny. Picked up at Delphi and went to American Airlines @ Detroit Metro. Didn't have the airfreight BOL or a nonhazmat certification so AA wouldn't take it. USC talked me through the BOL and faxed a certification which I signed for them. They're still in the learning stage, I'd say.

Hiya Dave,

That's pretty much what I'm doing now. I've been to AA a number of times. (That's American Airlines, not much of a drinker here:+ ) I was wondering if they had a freight terminal out of Flint Bishop Airport. If UPS works out of Metro but not Flint I'd prolly stay where I'm at.

I'm fine until Feb of 2007 either way. Then it comes down to will I want to get a newer truck to do this job. I'm leaning towards no if I work out of Metro. I'd be more apt to do it if I worked out of Flint.

I appreciate the heads up.

Take care,
Danny

jbrbears,

The UPS Expedite ad on EO pictures an expediter truck of the type used in over-the-road expediting; something quite different than local delivery of freight from airports.

What, if anything is UPS Expedite doing with the kind of truck pictured and the kind of freight implied in the OcOnnell definition, which is, "Door to Door; Exclusive Use; and, Time Specific. Additionally, true expediting is on a schedule determined by the customer, not the carrier." Add regional coverage at least, if not national.

In other words, does UPS Expedite have freight that say picks up in Chicago and is transported in an exclusive-use truck to say Los Angeles. And if so, what will that truck driver or team do for freight once the truck delivers in Los Angeles?

If a customer calls UPS with such a shipment, how would UPS handle it if no trucks in it's less than 100-truck fleet handle the call?

Door to door, exclusive use, and time specific is pretty much all we do...Next flight out, hazmat, we pretty much cover it all, even charters. Owner operators who happen to get "stuck" in a location are paid "special" attention, we don't want any driver sitting for more than a day or two. due to the fact that expedited freight is really slow these days, it's really important for our drivers to be "flexible". If a customer does call us, and we don't have an owner operator reasonably close, we usually will resort to cartage companies in that area. from what I understand, our carrier relations dept goal is to increase our owner operator fleet to the point where using cartage companies is a rarity. Peace

They'd probably handle it the same way FXCC does... they'd broker the load out.

Danny, I've only seen The Brown @ Biship, same with Metro. If they had one in Flint I don't think I'd have picked up @ Delphi.

My load had to be picked up by midnight and del. to AA by 06:00 to make the 1st flight out. Ended up making the 2nd flight because of the paperwork problem. It was going to El Paso so The Brown must not have very many flights out of Flint or Metro.

I turned down one going to Metro a month or so before this one, so there are a few available.

Jbrbears - Is UPS Exp putting on vans any time soon?? I have filled out online app last Monday, and left msg on # listed for UPS Exp. So far, no response and a follow up call lead to a full mailbox on your recruiter's ans. machine. I live in Philly area, are you in need of vans there..

Heya Dave,

That's pretty much what he (John, the UPS recruiter) said. There are a few available from Flint, but not many & they go down to Metro. That would be fine except my hope would be that there'd be something from Metro back towards Flint & on that end of things there's no gaurantees.

Right now w/ EGL I tend to go to Metro empty but then take 2 or 3 back towards Flint. The other situation that happens a lot is that I head up north & deliver that frieght to Metro. I actually like those runs a lot because it's a scenic drive & by time I hit Detroit there's no traffic. The dead miles are higher for sure, but it's a trade off I'm happy to take. Between the two companies, EGL & UPS, I like it where I'm at currently. UPS will come into the picture when it's time for me to get a new van. They may/may not need any drivers at that time. If they do great & if they don't I think things will work out pretty well. Who knows? EGL might even take a look at my van & give me some kind of deal like Greg has w/ his company, where I can keep using it as long as I keep it in good working order. All in all I think things will work out pretty good though. I appreciate your input here.

Thanx,
Danny

Heya Twin,

He said he was pretty busy. I had to chuckle when I saw your comment because I know where you're coming from. I talked to someone who got her app. responded to in 20 minutes & I was thinkin it wouldn't be long for em to get back w/ me. What happened is he's been swamped w/ calls/apps since they advertised on EO here. He's def. got a long list of people to call & will def. get back w/ ya. Ya might have to give him a little time though. Good luck to ya.

Take care,
Danny

Philly is a relatively busy area for us, so I'm sure you will be getting a call pretty soon...from what I gather, the recruiting folks are climbing the walls getting calls done...peace;-)
