the local only work is specifically for airport drops and recovery/delivery (from MCO, for example). Owner operators who prefer to "stay local" do these types of runs, as well as their preference of miles from home they will go. For example, you would have the option to state to dispatch that you won't go further than 100 miles from home. In those cases, we wouldn't call you for a delivery picking up from MCO that was 150 miles from Orlando airport. Locals also have the option to even give hours they will/won't work. Of course, this will limit the amount of runs you would have a chance to get, and we would then resort to calling a local cartage company instead. As far as cars, they CAN be used, but it's not encouraged. I seriously doubt that carrier relations will be hiring someone who specifically wants to use a car as their transport vehicle. the SCS stuff is still separate, and the ability to make decent money as a local is totally dependant on the market in which you live, ie how much expedited freight is moved into/out of your area. MCO used to be reasonably busy for us about 3 years ago, but it's dropped off a lot. hope this helps!
