Sprinter turbo leaking oil?

So I just got my Sprinter back from an oil change and the tech, who used to service Sprinters, said my turbo was leaking oil pretty bad and it was going all through the lines. I'm obviously no mechanic but I do trust this guy (known him for years) and he has nothing to gain by giving me a head's up (they don't do mechanical work there). So is a turbo leaking oil almost always lead to replacing the turbo? I know that is like a $3000 job. Looking for advice before i take it to the shop today. :(

It depends on whether the bearings in the turbo were affected. They can test it to find that out.
If the vehicle has a lot of miles then you may want to replace it anyways.

It shouldn't be bad at those miles. Your air filter isn't clogged by chance is it? If your turbo can't get enough air it starts sucking from other places looking for air.

Yeah, 200,000 is pretty quick for a turbo to go bad. They usually wait until at least 400,000. But, it happens.
Then again, it might just be an oil leak at either the filler or return line, which can make it look like the turbo is bad.

If you do have to have it replaced, you can do it for quite a bit less than $3000.

2003*Dodge from TurboChargerPros

Re-manufactured - $545
TurboChargerPro - $565
OEM Garrett - $995

When I replaced mine I was going to get a remanfuactured Garrett but they were out of them, so I got a new TurboChargerPro one. Same warranty, either way. You can re-use the electronic actuator on your current turbo, instead of having to pay another $500 or so for it. The OEM turbo at the dealer includes an actuator, and you'll pay $1550 for it.

The unit from TurboChargerPro will include the main gasket, but you should also replace the oil filler and return tubes, and the gaskets for those. They'll probably have a kit you can get with the turbo, if not you can order those from Berry Dodge or Europarts.

I know there is a good chance this won't get seen but Xiggi, if this happens, does the Turbo usually need to be replaced or is it unclear? I believe this happened to my 2008 2500 Sprinter and I'm trying to determine if its worth the repair.

Any feedback appreciated!

It is not unusual for them to pass a little oil. A little oil looks like a hell of a lot when it's spread out all over everything. If your air filter is clogged, the problem should basically rectify itself.

What's the oil consumption like? How much does it use in, i don't know, 5000 miles?
