The above is ..... possibly one of the more stupid statements I have seen in some time on here ......
FWIW - just for those in our midst who are seemingly geographically challenged:
News Flash: Canada is indeed part of of
THE NORTH AMERICAN continent .... which would make those folks hailing from there (or Mexico, or any one of the countries in Central and South America) .....

and sooner or later he won't be able to call himself a Canadian just as our kids will no longer be taught that they are AMERICANS....
Well, if you used the same thought processes to reach this conclusion as you did to determine that OVM wasn't
"an American" I'd say the accuracy of your conclusion (or your observations) is dubious at best ......
Regardless of that, while I am no fan of political correctness run amok, "people of the United States" is, in fact, a more accurate description - and certainly doesn't preclude being
an American - in fact, not only does it not preclude it, it would be inherent in the definition of "people of the United States" .... since the United States
is located in North America .....
One could argue that the use of "American" to describe, and only mean US Citizens is in fact
a corruption of the word.
One could also argue that, given your comment first quoted at the top of my reply, perhaps it just
might not be a bad idea to teach our children that they are "people of the United States" ... (actually I would prefer "citizens of the United States" - since that would at least bring the idea of being "a citizen" into play)
Further, the case could be made that the commonly held view of
"an American" only being a US Citizen is a prime example of the
arrogance that the citizens of this country (known as American arrogance
) seem to show the rest of the planet ... (something of which many folks who reside here seem to be only dimly aware of at best ..... but is all too obvious to those that hail from elsewhere ....)
