Respect for the flag

But....was it made in China? ;)
Probably not. The headline grabber is the numbers the US Census Bureau released showing 94%, or $3.6 million worth of flags imported into the US were imported from China. The other 6% were imported from India (3%), Taiwan (2%) and Other (1%). That'll get the talk show hosts seething and fuming. Ninety Four Percent of US flags made in CHINA?!?!?!

No, ninety four percent of the flag imports were from China.

97% of all US flags and related items like banners are made in the USA, with 3% of all flags being imported (down from 6% in 2007). US producers roll out more than $350 million worth of American flags and banners every year... dwarfing the $3 million and change produced in China. Mostly what gets produced in China, India and Taiwan are the cheap little stick flags, plastic flags, and adhesive flag stickers.

The chances are that not only was that flag was American made, but the materials and inks were made in the USA, as well.

If you want to get an genuine, true blue (and red and white) American flag, get one made by Annin Flagmakers. Their American flags fly above the White House, Capitol Building and every other federal building in the country, above every US embassy in the world, used in every presidential inauguration since 1849, draped the coffins of presidents (and my dad), and is one of only four vendors the Pentagon authorizes for military use (US flags as well as any and all other military flags). They made the flag that was raised at Iwo Jima, and the six US flags that Apollo astronauts planted on the Moon ($5.50 each, about $33 in today's dollars).

Incidentally, of the Six Flags the astronauts planted on the Moon (not to be confused with the Six Flags Amusement parks), five are still standing, as confirmed by lunar orbit cameras. The first one, planted by Buzz Aldrin, was planted too close to the lunar lander and was blown over by the exhaust launch when they departed the Moon. All six (nylon) flags are pure white, and no longer possess anything blue or red. You hang out a US flag for 44 years here on Earth and see if it doesn't fade a little bit. On the Moon, where there is zero ozone layer protection from the UV rays of the sun, and what takes decades to fade here on Earth will take 3 or 4 years max on the Moon. Cameras have confirmed they're still there, but it's just a matter of time before they disintegrate into ashes from the UV bombardment.

I hope aliens don't read the plaque that Armstrong, Collins and Aldrin left on the Moon (We came in peace for all mankind) and see the white flag thinking all mankind is surrendering.

That should give Hawk the runs.
