An excellent piece. Intelligent, thoughtful, well laid out. Hit all the salient points.

I also like how he hit on the root of the problem with, "We used to say the same thing in grade school," implying that some people have matured and grown out of such sentiments, but sadly too many others have not.

Unless you believe your feelings are paramount, then what someone thinks, be it religion, politics, or whatever, is irrelevant to the vast majority of interactions in civil society. I'm a big proponent of the Golden Rule. Don't do things to others that you wouldn't want done to you.

Why are companies compelled to fire people that are caught doing bad stuff outside of work? Whether it's this case or a racist rant ....

OK, imo this guy is an idiot. The state attorney's office will review the indecent and proceed accordingly.
Why does he need to loose his job?
I'm not defending any of the moronic behavior we see online .... but people are loosing their ability to work.

Public Shaming at it’s worst.

The hard part about bigotry is no one thinks they’re a bigot, even though they’re aware they’re doing something bigoted.

The Denver bakery should have made the gay couple their wedding cake.

The Red Hen should have served Sanders and company.

I'm not sure if I'm getting this clear, so a bit of clarification would help ....

How are "blacks trying to erase their bad history" .....? Are you referring to the confederate flag comment?

It’s not just about the confederate flag, it’s trying to erase everything and everybody who had anything to do with the south.

At what point does it end? What else are they going to try to erase from the history books?

Remember the whole three-fifths of a person thing, and how that's used as a cudgel to beat up Southern White Males and play ttie victim? Nope .Southerners and especially slave owners were dead set against that. It was the Notherners that wanted freed slaves to count at a whole person and for slaves to count as three-fifths of a person. It had to do with population numbers, distribution of federal funds, and Congressional representatives.

Blacks should be using what they call offensive statues as learning tools for future generations to come...we learn from our past and try not to repeat...offensive books? Tom Sawyer comes to mind with :censoredsign: Jim..anyone remember that?....its a classic...

Oh....looks like its not allowed as well....most can fill it in...

So here's a few thoughts ....

Are there people trying to rewrite history in this country? Yeah, there are. I think those folks are on the fringe. So, I'm going to attempt to explain where I think most people are with this issue.

The pictures that OVM posted are not a good direct comparison to the confederate flag. I think most folks see the confederate flag as a symbol of hate. At this point in our history it's a hate symbol. A good direct comparison would the the swastika. The swastika is a hate symbol. OVM, ya wanna ask any Jew how they feel about the swastika? There are reasons why there are laws against displaying it in Germany. The problem in the US is we get so wrapped up in this cry for freedom that we've lost all sensibility of what's morally right/wrong .... good/bad. confederate flag = bad ... pornography = bad .... we live with a whole bunch of hateful, poisonous, hurtful stuff because we want to have the freedom to be self destructive.

I don't think most want to erase history ... but we certainly don't want to glorify hateful crap anymore. I've lived in SC for 14 yrs. I'm very glad they finally took down the confederate flag from the capitol building. Government buildings, public spaces, whatever ..... statues of historical figures don't bother me. I will say, I can see this point of view ..... if I were black and I lived in an area where a large percentage of the population is black ... why would we want to glorify these statues? Putting them in a museum is appropriate.

As far as the flag
I see it more one symbol representing slavery..as opposed to representing a country it was intended.
Swastika ... again associated with the Nazis aka SS...

Ragmans point... yes it seems an opposing opinion these days is met with hatred and disdain and some far left and right are condoning violent objections ... the country appears headed toward a nasty future at this rate...

Hatred is happening in this country because the powers that be push for it. It's so easy, even a CIA-backed Gloria Steinem could do it. Even a Charlottsville riot, with no police to be seen (but very likely unseen authority as agent provocateurs), could do it. MGTOW movement coinciding with the Me Too movement? I won't get into theories here, but people better dammmed sure start questioning the man behind the curtain.

All of you who think we need to end racism, or stop hatred... it's natural. Know what happens when an attempt is made to lessen the effects of something natural (I'm thinking mosquitoes here)? The cure is worse than the disease. What is the only real way to deal with it? Hold your nose and let freedom ring! Let liberty rain down upon us all. As disgusting as it might be to have someone act in defiance to our own illustrious code, they have a right to be who they are. I suggest the buttercups suck it up.

The problem with the Confederate Flag comparison to the Nazi symbol is more than a few points:

First, what we call the “Confederate Flag” was NEVER the National Flag of the Confederate Nation. NEVER. There was 3 flags, and I feel it would be disrespectful to fly any of “Those” Flags. The Flag we know as the “Confederate Flag” was sometimes used in battle because the first Confederate Flag looked so much like the Union, they were confusing who’s side was who. Otherwise, it’s simply a memorial flag to remember the fallen soldiers.

Second point, why would we respectfully remember the Confederate Soldiers with this flag? Let’s look at the facts in context:

*The South was guilty of slavery, not a holocaust. The South didn’t commit genocide.

*The Union State Missouri still had legal slavery after the Emancipation Proclamation, since it only applied to the southern states.

*Native Americans had slaves.

Third point, the Union committed genocide of the Native Americans immediately after the war. Kind of hypocritical to accuse the south of evil when the Union literally was the Nazis that got away with their holocaust. This is why people from the South roll their eyes when non southerners try to claim a moral high ground. Still, with this fact:

*Native American Nations had slaves, fought against the Union, lost, yet their national symbols aren’t called “racist”. In fact, they’re held in respect. Confederate symbols should be treated exactly like Native American National symbols.

The absurdity of this modern hatred towards the south is so lacking of facts and perspective that it’s really not worth taking seriously. People from the South are going to keep flying Confederate Flags, and the people that hate the south are going to hate.

Rant over, lol

Just pointing out the simple facts.

The South is guilty of slavery.
The North also is guilty of slavery.
The Native Americans are guilty of slavery.

The North is also guilty of Genocide, unless you think that the Confederate soldiers were raised from the dead, and they fought for then President Ulysses S Grant.

I don’t expect this generation to understand respect for soldiers. Why would today’s people respect the dead Confederate soldiers that fought and died for their states and their families. People today don’t respect the American Flag, kneeling and sitting down during the National Anthem. This generation doesn’t respect their living soldiers.

Obviously, the South got over the Civil War. On 9/11, men from the south enlisted to fight and die because their brothers in New York were attacked. Today’s rewriting of history is just kids being kids.
