IONIA -- To the little boy's mother, it was just a 6-year-old boy playing around.
But when Mason Jammer, a kindergarten student at Jefferson Elementary in Ionia, curled his fist into the shape of a gun Wednesday and pointed it at another student, school officials said it was no laughing matter.
They suspended Mason until Friday, saying the behavior made other students uncomfortable, said Erin Jammer, Mason's mother.
School officials allege Mason had displayed this kind of behavior for several months, despite numerous warnings.

"I do think it's too harsh for a six-year-old," said Jammer, who was previously warned that if Mason continued the practice he would be suspended. "He's six and he just likes to play."
Jammer says her son isn't violent, and there are other, more effective ways of teaching him not to make a gun with his hand.
"Maybe what you could do is take his recess away," suggested Jammer, adding her son doesn't have toy guns at home.
"He's only six and he doesn't understand any of this."

Jeffersonville middle school student suspended for touching pill

Jeffersonville middle school student suspended for touching pill - WAVE 3 TV Louisville, KY |

JEFFERSONVILLE, IN (WAVE) - The parents of a Kentuckiana seventh grade student say their young daughter was suspended from school for doing exactly what she's been taught to do for years - to just say no to drugs.

The girl did not bring the prescription drug to her Jeffersonville, IN school, nor did she take it, but she admits that she touched it and in Greater Clark County Schools that is drug possession.

Rachael Greer said it happened on Feb. 23 during fifth period gym class at River Valley Middle School when a girl walked into the locker room with a bag of pills.

"She was talking to another girl and me about them and she put one in my hand and I was like, ‘I don't want this,' so I put it back in the bag and I went to gym class," said Rachael.

The pills were the prescription ADHD drug, Adderall. Patty Greer, Rachael's mother, said she and her husband are proud of their daughter for turning down drugs, just like she's been taught for years by DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) instructors at school.

"I'm proud her conscience kicked in and she said, ‘No, I'm not taking this. Here you can have it back,'" Patty Greer said.

But just saying no didn't end the trouble for Rachael. During the next period, an assistant principal came and took Rachael out of class. It turned out the girl who originally had the pills and a few other students got caught. That's when the assistant principal gave Rachael a decision.

"We're suspending you for five days because it was in your hand," said Rachael.

If I had school age children these days I would either put them in private school or home school them. The schools were not all that good when mine were in school but they are going off the deep end now.

This is zero tolerance at it's best,Why are we paying these administrators high salaries when the janitor could take care of the paperwork needed to enforce zero tolerance?

The whole system is broken from the highest doctorate program down to the pre-k classes. It's not really worked for 40 years.

If we can't end public schools, which I think that we should, at the very least we can outlaw teachers unions!! They are my employees, not the schools boards. I pay their wages. As does every home owner. They whine about pay raises while those who pay them are being laid off or taking cuts. Guess teachers use "government" math.

The union is the biggest problem. With the latest Obama contest, the MEA refused to sign off on the application to the adminstration for the contest because there wasn't enough clear understandings what the teachers will get and Michigan lost. It wasn't a problem that there was a contest (meaning our representitives FAILED to do their jobs) but rather the need to participate in a contest to get additional funding of OUR tax money - is this really how it is supposed to work, Comrade?

I am all for banning the union for teachers, they don't deserve any protection when the schools produce poor products and have for a long time. The teacher is a public servant, not part of a private company, so they work at our behest.

The other issue is administration staff, why does a school system need multiple vice prinicples when their enrollment is 40% from the peak they had in the 60's?

Get rid of them, get rid of the office staff that supports them and get rid of the other staff who do nothing.

For example Detroit Public Schools is getting ready to have an influx of some $200M to 'save' the students.

One of the people being interviewed today over this announcement is a "trucker" who has an 11 year old who went to 2 charter schools and is back in public school because the kid did well in public school. Personally I would see what the problem really is, the kid does better because the standards are lower, hence the kid will fail in a real class setting.

My wife is getting ready to go to college, she's never been in a college class room ever and she is told by others at her work that she has can test out of some classes by taking a placement test which will cover her pre-reqs like business math and composition. I told her that's not the way it works, the placement test is to see what level of math and English you will need to get started, not what you can skip. I further explained that one of the reasons that this is done is because the public schools don't teach english or math the right way and a number of students coming out of the school are unequipped to handle basic math problems.

END PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
