Please edify and amuse me with how I dismissed the views of the old coal miner. I was merely making an observation...
Sure. You said,
"You may be right, but it's hard to take seriously the views of someone who hides behind the persona of an ancient philosopher."
Your statement can be interpreted in two ways. One, that Aristotle the Expediter really and truly hides behind the persona of Aristotle the Philosopher and thus expresses his opinions in the manner of the philosopher and therefore it becomes hard to take him seriously.
The other way to interpret that statement is that you are finding it hard to take Aristotle the Expediter's viewpoints seriously because of his screen name, and your use of the word "persona" is used incorrectly to simply mean his screen name.
Since he does not, in fact, post in the manner of the Aristotle the Philosopher and does, in fact, post his own views in his own way, then the first interpretation is clearly incorrect and the second interpretation would be the correct one.
Since the first interpretation is not the correct one, then by you saying it was "an observation" is, at the very least disingenuous. You said, "You may be right," which in and of itself gives validity to his viewpoints, but then you dismissed his validity completely, and did so for immature and illogical reasons with the rest of that sentence. No observation was made.
"...but it's hard to take seriously the views of someone who hides behind the persona of an ancient philosopher," is a statement about yourself, not an observation.
So, you either dismiss the seriousness and validity of his statements because of his screen name, with the reason given, therefore if valid, being reason enough for others to dismiss them as well, or you
personally have a
hard time taking his viewpoints seriously for the same reason. Either way, you're dismissing his viewpoints. It's just that one way you're dismissing them yourself because it's hard for you to accept them, and the other way, by offering up a reason why others should think like you, you're encouraging others to dismiss them as well.
Now, it could also be that you have a disagreement with the philosophy of Aristotle the Philosopher which has created a personal bias or prejudice to anything you read that is attached to the name "Aristotle", and that's why you personally find it hard to take Aristotle the Expediter's comments seriously. If that's the case, then you should have made yourself more clear by actually stating as much. But, I feel this is the least likely explanation for why someone's screen name could possibly have anything to do with the content, seriousness or validity of what they post.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got to go find a good rock to sun myself on.
