Obama: GOP Drove The Country Into A Ditch. 'Now They Want The Keys Back'
Our President still speaking the truth.
It's easy for this smug pr*ck stand before a friendly audience and make jokes like this in a venue where his statements go unchallenged. The problem is, this guy IS a joke - and most of the voters have come to realize this. Granted, the Bush administration and a willing congress spent way too much money during their time in office.
But let's not forget the core issue that caused this recession - the financial collapse that conveniently happened at the best possible time for democrats during an election year. It's been well documented that the cause of the collapse was the irresponsible and reckless lending practices being conducted by Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and other financial institutions that were loaning money to people who couldn't repay it. Remember also that it was the GOP who tried to bring up more regulation of these institutions, only to be shot down by democrats such as Barney Frank, Maxine Waters, Chris Dodd who went on record to say that Fannie and Freddie were in great shape and Franklin Raines (head of Fannie) was doing a wonderful job. Their shabby lending practices actually started during the Clinton administration when it was decided that everyone should have a house regardless of their ability to afford one.
At the present time it appears that the economy has come out of the ditch - barely. But there is still damage to the wheels and engine, and the new driver is the equivalent to an 8 year-old brat who has been in a car seat all his life. Unemployment is still at 10% and the underemployed/not- looking-anymore percentage of the workforce is more like 15%. We won't see a real recovery until that figure gets closer to 6%. Remember - traditional "full employment" is 5.5%.
The brat behind the wheel also wants to steer the car in a different direction; he wants to drive it to the nearest salvage yard, scrap it and put everyone on economic public transportation - the streetcar named Socialism. As he heads toward the scrap yard, Harry the butler and Nancy the nanny ride along in the back seat. They've been given the family piggy bank, have broken it and have thrown the money out the windows to "spread it around". Since the money's gone they're now using the credit cards and have run up a balance higher than all the previous drivers combined - and it's only taken them a little over a year!
Fortunately, the car probably won't make it to the scrap yard - chances are it will break down again. The financial engine won't run on snake oil and the tires of employment won't roll until they're at a full level again. The family of voters will have to send somebody to fix it and find another driver - hopefully an adult this time. We can only hope the family will throw the car's current occupants out on the street and will be able to repeal some of the junk that's been charged to the credit cards. The unfortunate reality is that the balances on the cards will be passed on to the family children, so it will be up to them to deal with the financial excesses of their parents.
Right now my mind's eye envisions a scene from something like a Little Rascals movie - a Model T weaving down the road with Buckwheat behind the wheel, Laurel and Hardy in the back seat and the Keystone Cops (GOP) frantically chasing them. We can only hope there's a real hero behind them somewhere unseen, but closing ground fast enough to save the old car before it's crashed and totalled.
